CTV is determined to make sure everyone knows that the "Own the Podium" program is a failure. Well CTV is the failure. They fail to understand that Canadians are pumped about our athletes and we understand that they can't all be on that podium. Yet CTV continues to mention the fact that we are not in top spot on the podium. Hey CTV, we NEVER have been! We just finally won our first gold on Canadian soil. We now have 4 golds, that is awesome!
Every time CTV comments negatively on the "Own the Podium" program, they are slagging our athletes. They are making every athlete who does not gain the podium, feel like the money taxpayers put into the program is a waste of money. Canadians do not feel that way.
CTV, as the official broadcaster of the Olympics, needs to think about what they are doing to our athletes every time they yap about our not being on the top of the podium. Being lefties, the media doesn't see how negative they are and how they are hurting our athletes. Typical lefties, they can't handle success.
So, let me, a blogger, tell our athletes, what the media doesn't want to, or can't.
You guys and girls ROCK! You make us so proud whether you gain the podium or not. We see you. We appreciate all the hard work you have put into your sports. We take every turn with you on the downhill, and feel every spin on the ice. We cheer for you whether you win or lose, because you went out there and tried. That is all we can ask.
We salute you, for your dedication, your love of country, and your spirit. You make Canada what it is, the best country in the world. Take a bow.
Win or lose, you ROCK!

Bro, I get your point. We set the bar higher than it has ever been and perhaps we were never going to win the podium. The question is, how much money do you want to pump into Olympic sports? I love the Winter Olympics, but I don't want tax dollars going to our pathetic alpine ski program. Seriously, who is leading the field in DNFs?
If we are to chip away at our "structural deficit", I have some ideas where we can start.
It is easy for the media and the progressives to resort to negative spin. (Half full or half empty.)
The Progressives are always unhappy, bitter about something trying to save or make the planet a better place by taxing us and elminating our activity.
Lately they have jumped on the pro-abortion, stop western democracies from emitting Carbon while allowing the favourite fascist, dictators a free ticket on human right abuses.
The MSM have been drinking from the same well of self-loathing in looking for victims and someone to blame.
The simple fact is you can't buy a medal is MOST sports unless 'style' is in a factor in the score.(Figure skating)
It is normal to feel dissappointment when our athletes fail to medal, but when the difference is 0.07 Male skeletion (Gold-Montgomery) for example are we being petty?
Most of us are being told we are being 'let down' by the negative narrative.
Own the podium is better than giving tax dollars in funding political left biased NGO's such as Kairos, Planned Parenthood, Rights & Democracy.
We do own the podium - we have just decided to rent it out to a bunch of foreigners for a couple of weeks. I am sure that they will return it in nice condition when they are done with it.
Seriously, who cares about all the little sports that you see once every four years.
Unless you have a relative or friend participating Canadians care about maybe five sports: men's hockey; men's hockey; men's hockey; men's hockey; and men's hockey.
And that's is looking a little shakey right now.
This is the CBC and CTV's way of saying again - "Harper is the failure" - that will soon come..... I am sure before this is over - they will be saying PM Harper planned to gain strength from all of Canada's gold metals - and what did he get - nothing... the program was a failure and it is the PM fault!! - I cans see Jane Tabor and Jim Travers' headlines now - "Canada was a failure at the Olympics and it is the PM's fault!!" - just wait and see - and then Kady will produce a "blog" to bash the PM..... it is coming - just wait!
I thought you were boycotting google? What gives?
The Toronto media dirt bags are doing everything they can to win a Gold Medal in the Whining competition.
As expected, they do have some serious challengers, so we can expect to see them go very viral at breakneck speeds as they head for the finish line.
Besides all that, we can presume that all this “Vancouver” stuff is bringing on a serious episode of cognitive dissonance with the realization that they’re only the centre of their own little world and not Canada’s.
Well said Mary Hines!!! The MSM are very predictable!!!! I say Go Canada Go. I have enjoyed every minute of the competitions so far and CTV coverage has been outstanding. TSN has always been golden in their coverage of curling. Now we just need to put in our best goalie for the rest of the hockey games.
Carolyn=Gayle?
Carol-Lie'n we are boycotting Google ... Bing Bing Bing.
Yup ... we are "renting" the podium but there are thousands of kids out there who will want to get it back and who are/will become great Canadians. "Sports works", always has always will. Set backs in life teach great lessons.
BTW ... how much money does the US government contribute to their athletes? Damn those capitalists!!
This stopped being about winning medals the moment we got our first gold.
It is all now about setting the standard for the whole package. Whoever thought that we would support these games in the way we have.
People who have been to many games say that the Vancouver crowds and spectators are unprecedented. There are line ups to get into every pavilion and I have never heard so many spontaneous renditions of O Canada.
Just having all of those east coast talking heads here for 2 weeks and seeing westerners at their best is a game changer for Canada. The media will never again be able to be dismissive of our ideas without their own internal dissonance.
That in itself makes all the money worthwhile.
Remember that Calgary became a powerful international city after the '88 Games.
If nothing else having Colbert doing his shows from Vancouver is going to be the best advertising that we didn't have to pay for.
We have stopped saying goodbye to each other out here. Instead we end every conversation with Go Canada Go!!!!!!!!
What would the results be if we didn't own the podium. How many athletes are there, how many medals in total will be given out. So, are we to say that of the 5000+ plus there, they all expected to medal.
They have done their best and the media put too much pressure on them. Then you have to realize that in some countries their competetors train for 4 yrs, steady-the chinese women's curling team, and get paid while doing it. They are professionals.
And who decides what style or jump or costume will be the best.
Maybe we should petition for media whinning to be an olympic sport.
Think of the times between 1st and 4th, and it is fractions of a second.
Go Cheryl Go. And it would be nice if our commentators in the media didn't show their bias for a certain curling team, and it isn't Canada. They slag AB in the Briar, Hearts, Worlds and Olympics.
Bickering has always been a part of the Olympics. To me it is supposed to be the vision of a future where this (both the athletic competition and the griping) is the substitute for war.
As for "own the podium", it appears to be a badly named programme, but it has been successful. We've never won a medal at home, and now we have several. Case closed, no?
When is the switchover to Wordpress coming?
Correction, LS: We'd never won a gold medal at home up until now.
Another Gold for Canada in Ice Dancing. It is the first Gold ever won by a north american, and it is the first time since 1966 that Russia has not won a gold in any figure skating event.
And the winners thanked everyone for getting them to the podium.
If Own the Podium has done nothing else, it has given Canadians a reason to celebrate our younger generation something to cheer for and aim for. No longer will we accept the media saying we should not be proud of our Country.
Funny how Calgary made money off the '88 winter Olympics and Montreal still hasn't paid off the '76 summer games!
Perhaps because Montreal is located in a corrupt backwater welfare case of a failed socialist dreamworld?
Best part of the '88 games, Ralph Klien was mayor of Calgary at the time! Cue the exploding lefty heads in 3...2...1...
HA!
Eskimo: I don't think Carolyn is Gayle. Carolyn's comments are far too juvenile and silly. Gayle is far more provacative and she does put some intelligence behind her convolutions. Carolyn is one-dimensional. Gayle, at least, is three-dimensional. I disagree with 99.9% of what Gayle says and I think she is very misguided but she does put effort into her convoluted and provocative arguments - I have to give her props for that. Carolyn simply puts forth silly and childish comments.
'Bickering has always been a part of the Olympics.' Yes, that is true and it is unfortunate that bickering is part of the Olympics. It should be about amateur athletes and it should be about the feats which they perform. Sadly and disgustingly, the Olympics have become about money, fame, endorsements, politics, and all sorts of negative pursuits. Even the clothes they wear have become an issue of contention. Sad and downright criminal, IMHO. I feel for our athletes to have their achievements dissected by media which is biased in every direction, sad that politics from all sides enter the game. I wonder if this is what the originators envisioned. I highly doubt it.
