It appears that the Democrats already think they have invaded Canada! They do not think our oil is "foreign". Well I hate to disagree, but, Canada is a sovereign nation, and therefore our oil is "foreign" to the USA. We are happy to share it, for a price, but it is not yours. As a matter of fact, it's not even Canada's (remember the NEP?), it's Alberta's!

Alberta oil not 'foreign,' U.S. official tells premiers

One of the most powerful politicians in the U.S. said that while Washington wants to wean itself off foreign oil, Canada is the exception because it isn't "foreign," according to Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach.

The comments came as U.S Speaker of the House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi met with politicians, environmentalists and First Nations leaders in Calgary.

"She didn't consider Canada to be foreign oil," Stelmach said Thursday, noting that the politicians also spoke about his province's efforts in renewable energy during their dinner meeting on Wednesday.

So US Democrats feel they can dictate to us how we sell our oil? Environmentalists think they can dictate how we sell our oil? Easterners (McGuinty and Charest) think they can dictate to us how we sell our oil, even though they don't buy it? How about Albertan's sell their own oil, to whomever they want to, like China and India, if the US is unhappy with our "dirty" oil? How would Pelosi like to explain to the American people that 20% of the oil they need has become unavailable because Alberta doesn't want to sell their "dirty" oil to the USA anymore? Can you say $8.00 a gallon gas Nancy?

You don't want our "dirty" oil? Go buy "blood" oil from the Middle East and continue to support terrorism. Oh, and did anyone ask you about the environmental disaster that is happening in the Gulf right now? Did the environmental groups ask you about that? Funny how quiet the greenies have been about that little spill. You would suspect that because far left Obama is in power that the econuts are happy and that's why they are so quiet. What has happened to protests against "dirty" coal? Hello greenies, your prejudices are showing!

Politicians are still talking "global warming", econuts are still talking "climate change", with straight faces. HA!

One of those groups is Environmental Defence, whose executive director Rick Smith took issue with Stelmach's characterization of the oilsands.

Smith said the U.S. has never threatened to cut off Canadian oil imports, and he said that Stelmach was creating a "straw man" to distract from the real issues of pollution and climate change.

Hey Smith you ever seen the oilsands? Mother Nature's biggest oil spill ever, and all we are doing is cleaning up the mess, why would environmentalists complain about that?

Pelosi is a typical Californian lefty, who will be retired in November, so Rae can get a boner about meeting the botox queen, but he might want to be careful about his stance on energy.

Global Warming Sucks!

I know, it's called weather and that is different from global warming, or as it is now called "climate change", but it still sucked today!

This was at 8:00 this morning (Tuesday) in Edmonton. I took this photo just before leaving for work and just before the power went out.


It continued to snow most of the day, and only one being seemed to like our snowstorm. Our little (growing rapidly) seeing eye puppy from California, had a great time in the snow!



Unfortunately, the 60 km winds and blowing snow probably had something to do with this tragedy. Father, two little girls killed in truck-train crash My prayers go out to the family. I can not imagine what the Mother is going through right now.

We also have this nonsense going on: Fight over Lucy the Elephant heads to court Leave Lucy alone! PETA already kills most animals it supposedly saves.

Today, we shovel ourselves out, while mumbling about "global warming" and how it sucks!

Social Justice Replaces Global Warming!

Climate change hanging on by it's fingernails. Okay, forget about global warming, now it's social justice. This is an excellent catch phrase because it can mean anything, just like climate change. What is social justice? Anything the lefties want to promote.

Let's try it out and see how the lefties will work it.

WE DEMAND SOCIAL JUSTICE FOR:

- all the women in third world countries who need abortions, (never mind the need for clean water or feeding the living children they already have, or the fact that they want those children, not like lefty women who are too concerned about their figures to want a child).

- all Palestinians in the world.

- all the prisoners, especially native prisoners.

- Omar the Kid.

- George Galloway, the terrorist supporter, (but not Ann Coulter).

- seals that are being killed.

- marijuana smokers, (but cigarette smokers are evil, no social justice for them).

- gang members who have been transplanted from their homelands to harsh cold Canada.

- environmentalists who have been called deniers....(oops that's not right, I mean eco-nuts).

- Afghan prisoners hit by shoes.

- low income earners by taking from productive members of society.

- the handicapped, (oh wait, handicapped are so yucky to lefties they want to abort them).

- the aged, by allowing their doctors to put them to sleep, like you would your sick old dog. (Bloc MP initiated bill, thankfully it failed).

HINTON — Ross Kleman admitted in court Monday to choking and slashing the throat of an Edson church girl, killing the 14-year-old pastor’s daughter.

Kleman was initially charged with first-degree murder for the brutal attack on Emily Stauffer, but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of second-degree murder at the Court of Queen’s Bench in Hinton.

Court heard 44-year-old Kleman struggled with Stauffer, choked her, and slashed her throat on Sept. 27, 2008.

The teen was slain in broad daylight while walking along a popular walking trail.

Social justice, a nothing term, that lefties love to use because they are all about words and feelings, not so much with the facts. Facts scare them.

Where Has Global Warming Gone?

We are basking in the heat here in Alberta, (thanks El Nino)temperatures are above zero most days, big difference from being the second coldest place in the world just a month ago!

Watching the troubles in Haiti, I keep thinking what would happen if a disaster happened here during the winter and we lost all power and water. Many people would die from the cold. We could not survive in tents. People trapped in buildings would die from exposure within hours. Heat is bad, but not as bad as bone chilling cold.

Sea freezes in China? Jan 16 - Unusually cold winter weather across much of northern and eastern China has brought heavy snowfall and icy winds, snarling transportation both on land and at sea.

In the Bohai sea to the country's northeast, ice covered some 30,000 square kilometres - up to 40 percent of the Bohai bay - by Saturday (January 16).

Ice extended as far as 70 nautical miles from the coast in some areas and the thickness reached 50 centimetres, the report on China's Central Television (CCTV) said.

In the country's vast northern Inner Mongolia region, thirty-five cars were stranded in the middle of a highway for more than 15 hours.

Cold kills. Ice in China? Will this be taken into account when they average global temperatures? Or will they continue to hide the decline but reducing the number of temperature readings in China. Guess Canada doesn't count because they do not include the NWT, Yukon or the Arctic in their global temperature readings.

Someone needs to call these so-called scientists on what the heck they are doing. Other scientists should be concerned because people are going to put them on the same page as politicians and journalists.

If I had a choice, I would pick global warming over global cooling any day!

Relax Folks, It's Only Weather!

We have had it pounded into our heads that "weather" is not "climate" and that the "issue of climate change is settled", so I'm just going to show you the weather, and let you make up your own minds.

HALIFAX -- A storm descended on Eastern Canada on Saturday, with heavy snowfall, high winds and freezing rain expected to sweep across parts of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.

A low-pressure system south of Halifax was causing the nasty weather. In southwestern Nova Scotia, snow was falling Saturday, while some regions were being pelted with freezing rain and ice pellets. The province was expected to see as much as 30 millimetres of precipitation, Environment Canada predicted.

Winds were also expected to whip the province, including gusts reaching 160 kilometres an hour in the Cape Breton highlands.

Winds of 160 kilometres per hour, ouch, stay safe Atlantic Canada. Thankfully Canada is used to winter weather, it doesn't make it any better to be freezing on the prairies, or digging out from massive snowfalls, but we Canadians are a hearty bunch, and we have the clothing to help us survive. Not so in other countries.

New Delhi - At least 17 people died as towns and cities in India's northern states were hit by cold weather, officials said on Friday.

A five-day-long heavy snowfall caused27 weather-related deaths, the Ukrainian Health Ministry's press service said in a statement on Monday.

More than 80 people have died across Europe as days of snow storms and sub-zero temperatures swept the continent, causing traffic chaos for millions.

At least 42 people have frozen to death in Poland over the last three days and another 27 in Ukraine.

WINNIPEG - Poorly dressed for the weather and impaired by some kind of intoxicant, a man and woman sat exposed to the cold in a bus shelter for up to 10 hours before someone notified emergency personnel.

By then, it was too late. The 31-year-old woman was dead and the conscious 43-year-old man, whose body temperature was low, was in need of immediate medical care, police said.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Rescue crews on Saturday intensified the search for victims at a plush Brazilian beach resort ravaged by mudslides and flooding that have killed at least 64 people in three states.

Firefighters waded through mountains of mud and sifted through the remains of a lodge and homes that were destroyed in the early hours of Friday when a hillside collapsed in the luxury beach resort of Angra dos Reis, removing 35 bodies, authorities said.

The volcano's crater grew as it emitted lava on Tuesday. The Philippine government's vulcanologists said on Sunday that there could be a large explosion soon as magma swells inside and around the volcano's cone.

When is weather climate and climate weather? All I know is that it's been pretty cold, not just here in Canada, but worldwide, so is that global cooling?

Look Up, Way Up Into The Galaxy!

I did a Youtube search today to see what CO2 documentaries, other than Al Gore's garbage film, were out there. What have the climate scientists put up to show that the evidence is in, the debate is over, and global warming is indeed a fact. Here is a screen capture of the results:



Now if CO2 is the big bad cause of climate change, why do only documentaries that tend to disprove global warming show up as the first sites? Try it yourself, no documentary proving CO2 is a problem show up. Greenies appear to be relying on Al Gore's Hollywood production. They don't even attempt to present real facts to real people, you see, we are only the pockets to be picked, so they do not have to convince us of anything, only our governments.

I want to thank PM Harper and Minister Prentice for their adult approach to this issue. You stood proud and the majority of Canadians stood proudly with you. I enjoyed every fossil award we received...after all, that Alberta oil is because of all those fossils decomposing into black gold!

Now that the eco-nuts have frozen their nuts off, it's time to get serious. Environment Canada needs to be checked into to make sure they have not fudged our temperature readings. Next we need to call for an independent review of the Climategate scientists and we need to demand their data so that scientists can start recreating the real story about temperatures. I suggest 10 or more independent teams from around the world, who have NO contact with each other, and the UN IPCC should be shut down, it's a political organization that has nothing to do with science. If climate scientists do not agree with this, they are not real scientists. Real scientists form the hypothesis and then test it. They do not fake results to support a hypothesis. They do not suppress other theories that might disprove their point of view just because they are getting huge grants to support one point of view.

A perfect example of the climate scientists blocking other scientists who have a different theory is this video. It is worth watching and much more believable than anything I have seem from the global warming scientists. The Cloud mystery:













These are REAL scientists, not Al Gore, the politician or Suzuki, the bug guy. I hope you watched all of the video, because it's not flashy like Gore's made in Hollywood movie, but the science is easy to understand and testable. Same can't be said of the CO2 guys. Show me the proof you CO2 guys.

Look up, into the sky, do you see that big yellow ball that warms our earth? Could it maybe have something to do with our climate?

No Pickles This Year!

I know all the global warming nuts will not agree that this summer has been cooler than normal, but my plants tell me it has been. Cold weather is by far more harmful than warmer weather as far as crops are concerned.

Drought, cool temperatures threaten crops

While Canadians across much of the country have complained about a summer of weird weather, farmers say the rollercoaster ride of temperatures is wreaking havoc on their crops.

In the west, it's been a bad summer for B.C. forest fires, but the threat they pose to local wineries is just beginning.

.....In Alberta, meanwhile, the province has been suffering through its worst drought in 80 years. The drought has been so severe in some areas that cattle have nothing to eat.

Cattle farmer Seth Barnfield told CTV News that he's going to have to sell off his cows because the land simply can't sustain them any longer.

"We may have to do like a lot of people, and just sell them all out," he said. "That's the way you look at it. It's getting pretty tough."

In Manitoba and Ontario, soggy summer weather and cool temperatures have stunted some crops and resulted in a shortened growing season.

This is not something to just shrug off, this means fewer people will survive, because when crops fail, people suffer.

We are already feeling the end of summer. The leaves are starting to fall, and frost alerts are getting more common. Because we had such a late spring this year most crops are at least three weeks behind, and now the cooler weather is harming late crops like cucumbers. I have lots of blooms, but no cucumbers yet. My zucchini are starting to grow, then they stop, wrinkling up and dying on the vine. The cold evenings are stopping all growth.

My potatoes, carrots and beets are doing just great, but my tomatoes are smaller this year and are not even close to ripening. I know this is only one garden in Edmonton, but if you add up all the gardens/farms out there, it is worrying.

I do not believe that this years weather has anything to do with global warming/ climate change. As a matter of fact, global warming would have increased my crop, therefore feeding more people. If the oil sands are creating global warming, why isn't Alberta warmer? Why have we not had any smog alerts here in Edmonton?

The environmentalists are quick to blame the oil sands for polluting our planet, they are not so quick to tell us why China's coal industry is not polluting anything, even though you can see the pollution in the air. They want us to feel guilty because we have a much better living standard than those in third world countries, yet they fail to tell us that those third world countries are mostly controlled by dictators who repress their own people.

It's time to shake off the environmentalists, they whine and complain but do nothing. Does Suzuki have a garden? Does Lizzie May? Have they gone to Africa to dig a well? Do they do anything except protest? Seriously, what have they built? Do they have wind turbines running their power? HA!

No pickles this year because of global cooling.

Too Cold To Blog!

I spent the day at track and field and froze my butt off. At noon I finally went home, got the winter coat and boots out and went back with a blanket for my youngest boy, who was wearing shorts. My guy was upset because he would be competing with the grade eight's and thought he would do badly. Turns out he came in fourth in the 800 race, so he was quite happy. Learning about failure is not a bad thing, if you understand it's just a part of life that you can cry about, or defeat.

I have never been so cold for so long as today. Even sitting in front of our fireplace hasn't warmed me up.

I did watch the Ruby Hour, what a disgrace. If you didn't catch it, it was taped and you can see it all here. More on that when my fingers thaw out.

Where is that global warming we are supposed to be scared of? I say bring it on!!

The Hockey Stick Re-Found

Well the famous hockey stick analysis has been found again, and this time the data is actually factual.



Okay everyone start panicking like the global warmists! Oh wait, that's Canada's unemployment rate.

To all the lefties who think that PM Harper should have known this was going to happen, the graph clearly shows that the big jump didn't happen until December of 2008, and that the rise was catastrophic, to use lefty terms to scare everybody about their own shadows. Let's all start to run around like chickens with their heads cut off! The sky is falling, the sky is falling!

So if the original hockey stick graph portrayed global doom, what does our unemployment hockey stick mean? If this trend continues, by the year 2109, our unemployment rate will be 100%! YIKES! Grab your kids, some vegetable seeds and head for the hills! No one working will mean no government revenues......hey wait a second, maybe that's not such a bad thing. HA!

Seeing as the lefties function on emotions, this graph should scare the living daylights out of them. Expect more fear mongering by the MSM, who by the way are part of the reason that hockey stick is so high, by their own hand, they have sealed their destiny.

What bothers me is that the Liberals are blaming this downturn on the Conservative government and after being willing to form a coalition government to force MORE spending, are now scaring Canadians about a supposed $80 billion, "structural" deficit, that they conveniently forget to mention is a projection over 5 years.

Lefties are good at fear inducing graphs and emotional pleas to save ____ (fill in the blank) but they lack one of the most important political drivers of all....common sense.

You Are My Sunshine, Or Not!

CO2 is supposed to be the big bad wolf that is huffing and puffing and blowing our planet into global warming, or not. Remember the year 2000, the year our computers were all going to crash, and they didn't? Did you know that we were facing an even bigger menace? A solar flare.

June 7, 2000 -- Yesterday the orbiting Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) recorded a powerful series of solar eruptions including a full-halo coronal mass ejection (CME).

"The halo CME was magnificent," says Gary Heckman, a space weather forecaster at the NOAA Space Environment Center. "Based on [the characteristics of the eruption], this looks like a sure bet to produce a geomagnetic storm." ......

They may sound menacing, but CMEs pose little danger to people on Earth. Our planet's magnetic field serves as an effective shield against solar wind storms. The same familiar force that causes compass needles on Earth to point north also extends far into space. When a CME hits the magnetosphere -- the region around Earth controlled by its magnetic field -- most of the incoming material is deflected away from our planet.

If a gust of solar wind is very strong -- as this one might be -- it can compress the magnetosphere and unleash a geomagnetic storm. In extreme cases, such storms can induce electric currents in the Earth that interfere with electric power transmission equipment. Satellite failures are possible, too. Geomagnetic storms can also trigger beautiful aurorae. These "Northern Lights" are usually seen at high latitudes, but they have been spotted farther south than Florida during intense disturbances. The last time this happened was April 6, 2000.

That was 2000, they were more excited about the aurora you could see than any power failures. Fast forward to today.

Powerful Solar Storm Could Shut Down U.S. for Months

A new study from the National Academy of Sciences outlines grim possibilities on Earth for a worst-case scenario solar storm.

Damage to power grids and other communications systems could be catastrophic, the scientists conclude, with effects leading to a potential loss of governmental control of the situation.

The prediction is based in part on a major solar storm in 1859 that caused telegraph wires to short out in the United States and Europe, igniting widespread fires.

It was perhaps the worst in the past 200 years, according to the new study, and with the advent of modern power grids and satellites, much more is at risk.

Don't Blame Sun for Global Warming, Study Says

The sun's energy output varies slightly as sunspots wax and wane on the star's surface.

But sunspot-driven changes to the sun's power are simply too small to account for the climatic changes observed in historical data from the 17th century to the present, research suggests.

The difference in brightness between the high point of a sunspot cycle and its low point is less than 0.1 percent of the sun's total output.

"If you run that back in time to the 17th century using sunspot records, you'll find that this amplitude variance is negligible for climate," Foukal said.

So, the sun is a major player, or it isn't. Then again it might be, maybe if the moons all align at the right time and the sea ice melts, but only if Jupiter is perfectly visible to the naked eye, and nothing will happen if there is cloud cover.
Are all none scientific people, like me, as tired of the scare tactics being used by the eco-nuts as I am?. Oh, and let's not forget about this little threat to our climate....

Alaska volcano is rumbling, but no big bursts

"It looks like a volcano that wants to erupt, and our general impression is that it's more likely to erupt than not," said Tina Neal with the Alaska Volcano Observatory.

As a precaution, Elmendorf Air Force Base near Anchorage, about 160 kilometres northeast of Redoubt, was moving five C-17 cargo planes to McChord Air Force Base in Washington.

"We're just trying to be proactive and protect our assets," said a spokesman.

"Our aircraft support other missions, such as delivering supplies to Iraq and Afghanistan, and this relocation will allow them to still do all those missions even if the volcano does erupt."

On Saturday, geologists observed a quickly growing area of vigorous steaming on the north side of the mountain. Volcanic gas also was detected.

A hole in a glacier clinging to the north side of the volcano had doubled in size since Friday, spanning the length of two football fields.

The area is just below a dome that formed the last time Redoubt blew in 1990.

The signs of heat add to concerns that an eruption is near, which could send an ash cloud about 160 kilometres northeast toward Anchorage, the state's largest city.

An eruption in December 1989 sent an ash cloud 300 kilometres that flamed out the jet engines of a KLM flight carrying 231 passengers on its way to Anchorage.

Pilots were able to restart the engines and land safely.

The observatory last week detected a steep increase in earthquake activity below the volcano, upgrading its alert level to orange, the stage before full eruption.

Hey, but CO2 is the problem, ever though water vapour makes up 95% of greenhouse gases. I'm no scientist, but I can detect BS when I encounter it. Too bad the eco-nuts have no such radar detector.

Grab Your Kids Because....

It's time for a holiday in Antarctica! Yup you got it, Antarctica is warming! Well, maybe by one teeny tiny degree, but maybe not, depends which scientist you ask. That doesn't stop the MSM though, heck no, when they are on a global warming mission, nothing will stop them from using any report, no matter how they make up facts to prove their point.

"Now we can say: no, it's not true ... It is not bucking the trend."

That wouldn't be the same guy who distorted previous data called the Hockey Stick now would it??? So now he is making up data?? How believable is this study? It doesn't matter because if the MSM says it's true, it must be.

The researchers used satellite data and mathematical formulas to fill in missing information. That made outside scientists queasy about making large conclusions with such sparse information.

"This looks like a pretty good analysis, but I have to say I remain somewhat skeptical," Kevin Trenberth, climate analysis chief at the National Center for Atmospheric Research, said in an e-mail. "It is hard to make data where none exist."

Did you catch that, using mathematical formulas to fill in missing information, and presto, the Antarctica is melting!!! Oh, but they can't blame it on man-made global warming. Canada gets a say in this too:

The study has major ramifications for sea level rise, said Andrew Weaver at the University of Victoria in Canada. Most major sea level rise projections for the future counted on a cooling -- not warming -- Antarctica. This will make sea level rise much worse, Weaver said.

Global Warming On Our Trip, Or Not!

We had a wonderful Christmas, I hope everyone else did too! Funny what a week without the internet can do for you.

As we were driving, we heard that PM Harper had appointed 18 Senators, and that Mike Duffy was one of them, then the station cut out, and through the mountains you only get CBC Radio if you are lucky, so I had to watch TV to get confirmation that it really was true. I'm happy for "The Duff", but sad for Conservatives because the only balanced TV reporter (except Rex Murphy) has now lost his voice, and we have lost ours as a consequence. Craig Oliver must be livid, maybe he can console Phil Fontaine, but the Senate appointments are old news for everyone but me.

Global warming hit us on both the drive to and from Kelowna. You would not have believed how the frozen waterfalls were melting because of all the cars driving through the mountains. It was very disturbing! (If you look really hard, the salt on the road has melted some of the ice.)

The only conclusion I can reach is that we must close all routes into BC so we can save the planet! Sorry Mom and Dad, but the BC carbon tax seems to be working so well that you BC'ers must be isolated so that the rest of Canada doesn't pollute your world. This might also help to keep BC Bud in BC, but I'm sure that pack mules through the mountains will still somehow make it to Alberta. HA.

I'm looking forward to sleeping in my own bed, and after white knuckling it through the mountains one more time, I leave you with this video, which expresses my joy that my family is once again home, safe and sound.

Nobody has mentioned the HUGE hit that environmentalists have taken in this election. It was their one last chance to convince people that a carbon tax would fix "global warming" and that we should continue on the Liberal path to send money to Mo Strong for Kyoto. The carbon tax is now poison to any political party, much like the abortion issue. Any party that tries to impose a carbon tax on Canadians will get slaughtered like unborn babies at the polls, like Dion.

Sorry to see you go carbon tax, you were aborted before you even had a chance to live. You might have been the next Mozart, music to our ears, but you died on the Liberal operating table, torn to pieces, waiting for a voter to support you.

Poor carbon tax, but it was our choice to get rid of you, we could not have supported you, all the increased feeding costs you would have meant, we just couldn't have afforded you. Rest in pieces, carbon tax, if we would have let you live, we might have come to love you, but you were an unexpected inconvenience to our world.

We never expected you, we never wanted you. You were a big problem that would have upset our lives. You would not have actually made our lives better, you would have complicated our lives, made our lives worse instead of better, so rest in pieces, carbon tax.

Well there you have it folks, global warming causes more raw sewage to be dumped into the oceans! Now, let's not blame old useless sewage systems for this, nope, increased rain due to global warming is the cause.

Here's another malady the liberal bogeyman known as global warming is now predicted to cause: an increase in raw sewage being pumped into the ocean.

Honestly, at this point one has to wonder if much like writers for a daily comedy program there aren't teams of folks in offices around the world working 24 hours a day, seven days a week thinking up new bits of hysteria about climate change to scare the public.

Not only does Victoria pump its raw sewage directly into the Strait of Juan de Fuca, an arm of the Pacific Ocean, but city officials also claim they are doing the “right and responsible thing” for their community and the environment. They see no reason to change.

Not all of their constituents agree.

A group of activists called People Opposed to Outfall Pollution (POOP) has taken a lighthearted approach to a serious issue, poking fun at city officials with bathroom humor and using clever guerilla marketing tactics to focus a firestorm of embarrassing international media attention on Victoria’s toilet habits.

One POOP member, James Skwarok, 35, dresses up as Mr. Floatie, a cheerful, man-sized piece of human excrement. His antics in the cause of ending outfall pollution have generated news stories as far away as South Africa.

So, now we know that global warming is to blame for all this raw sewage being dumped into our oceans, we don't have to take responsibility, like maybe upgrading our sewage systems. For once, could they just call raw sewage, pollution and clean it up, instead of bringing in the global warming poop.

Now the Toronto Zoo has killed two male reindeer babies. Why? Beats me. I see absolutely no logic in their actions.

The Toronto Zoo is killing baby boy reindeer.

Now Dasher! Now Dancer! Now Prancer...

The first was dispatched shortly after his birth April 8.

His mom, Hayzel, bellowed mournfully for two days. You could hear her from Meadowvale Rd.

The second met the same fate at the point of a hypodermic on April 22.

His mom, CUPE, is named for the zoo staff's union.

Both little gaffers were chocolate brown and gangly cute. They had barely begun to nurse.

Both were perfectly healthy.

"Euthanized due to being male," says the keepers' report, terse and angry.

The keepers were so upset they left as the vets moved into the reindeer enclosure and refused to take part.

"This is wrong," the keepers told the vets, who were none too happy either.

Three female babies have been spared.

Where is Greenpeace on this horror? Too busy protesting 500 ducks that died. Yesterday the sky was black with geese returning up north, ducks aren't exactly a scarce commodity. It's sad the ducks died, but it wasn't deliberate like the killing of those two reindeer. That was a deliberate choice made by the Zoo.

Funny, I thought zoos love baby animals.

There's always a fuss when a cute little snow leopard or polar bear comes into the world, out in the wilds of northeast Scarborough.

Two days before Hayzel's son was put to death with sodium pentobarbital, a press release announced the arrival of a baby gaur.

Congratulations to Flower and Hercules. Gaurs are huge, wild Asian cattle.

The baby? A bouncing boy. Doing fine.

Need I add, a week from now is Mother's Day at the zoo. Given what's transpired, I hope they have the sense not to showcase the reindeer moms. Two of them aren't celebrating.

This is okay because the Zoo can't profit from selling the males?

Maria Franke, curator of mammals, tells me the decision to euthanize male reindeer calves was made by something called the Animal Care, Research and Acquisition Committee.

"It was a gruelling process," she assures me. "We do not take this lightly. There is science behind it."

It's especially hard to sell reindeer because of disease fears. There's no room.

Too expensive to release in the wild. If they keep the males they'll be lonely. They yearn for their own harem. We can't even sell the two bucks we have now. No one likes this. It's a necessary evil. Blah, blah, blah.

Science behind it? Oh, like the science behind global warming? Environmentalists, first it's global warming, then climate change, then don't kill the baby seals, then protest duck deaths, but no problem killing two perfectly healthy male reindeer, that's science.

On Mother's Day, I hope to see huge protests against the Toronto Zoo by Greenpeace, if not, it really tells you that they are in it for the money, not to protect the environment and ALL of those who live in it.
