Those Poor Seals? What About Baby Carrots?

While we were in BC we went salmon fishing, and caught two salmon and one shark.
The shark got thrown back into the ocean, the two salmon got clubbed over the head until dead. The crab we caught got it's shell ripped off and innards scrapped out (I think it was dead by then, but I'm not sure, I couldn't look).

Could I have done the clubbing and ripping off of the shell? Nope. Did I enjoy the salmon and crab, you bet! The crab was so sweet, dipped in lemon/garlic butter....YUMMM. Could you eat beef if you had to kill it? Very few of us could actually do the killing, but at least 90% of us will still eat meat. Today I killed a romaine lettuce for caesar salad, and pulled some carrots out of the ground, and yes, they were BABY carrots. My family enjoyed them.

Years ago, I went to my Aunt's farm to help with the cleaning of chickens, it was a stinky, dirty job, but I did it, and took home some fresh, free range chicken for my troubles. Did I like seeing the chickens killed, not in the least. That's what the animal rights groups count on, and that's why they still use 25 year old pictures of cute, white baby seals being clubbed, they know it will disgust us. We saw some seals, in the harbour, just waiting of all the fishermen to come back with their catches, so they could eat the scraps thrown to them. They are pests, but cute, like gophers on the prairies are cute, but pests.

I have never eaten seal, but I also refuse to eat lamb and veal, that's my choice, but I do not impose it on others. I hate kiwi, so I don't eat it. Should it be banned? How about horse? Not going to happen, but where are all the protests against those who eat dogs or cats? Cats...humm...something rings a bell about Liberals and cats. HA!

One of my neighbours gives me moose jerky, I love it, but I'm not about to go out and kill the moose, but once dead, I have no problem cooking and eating it. Think the seal hunt is inhuman? Go to your nearest slaughter house and see what goes on there.

As far as the seal hunt goes, I see it as no worse than the way we kill our domestic animals for food. Read the comments on this article, it seems the majority also supports the seal hunt. The Humane rep. better be careful, because she just called the government reports lies. Maybe these organizations and their representatives should be sued for slander. They had their way too long with the Liberal spineless government, now is the time for their free ride to end. Same with environmentalists saying the polar bears are endangered. They are the ones who are lying.

What happens when the seals start starving because of a population explosion, is a cull okay?

Yeah, but the seals are soooooo cute, Hunter. That makes it bad.

There was a video circulating a while back showing a polar bear inflicting very nasty @#$% on a seal. I think Nanook armed with a club and a snowmobile is pretty tame compared to the table manners of those gentle Coca-Cola teddy bears!

Nature can be cruel. Although I've never seen it, eyewitness accounts say that one of the worst type of animal kills is when a wolf pack brings down a moose or cariboo. While a few of them will distract the unfortunate deer, snapping at its face, the others are literally eating it alive from the hind quarters until it can no longer support itself.

And to think of all of the pickeral and jackfish I have clubbed in my days! Not to mention hoisting up Porky Pig on the front end loader of the tractor. Burning the hair with the propane torch and scraping it off with a large knife brings back fond farm life memories as well.

Had a great rack of lamb a couple years back while in 'Suzuki country' (Kitsilano) Washed it down with some great Cab. Sav.

Of course garlic fried pickeral and fried potatos (with more garlic, off course!) served with cold Bud is good eatin' too!

Oh the humanity!

LOL! Better watch it Hunter - People for the ethical treatment of Vegetables (PETV) will be picketing your garden!

Today i killed a lion a great big monster dandelion.I see robins killing earth worms and i purposely stepped on and squashed an earwig.I do not feel guilty,as a matter of fact i feel good.

Actually - come to think of it - I have killed a great many perfectly good garden plants this year - just yanked them up out of the dirt and tossed them aside for no other reason than they had grown too big.

Do I feel guilty......NO!!

BTW - have we finally scared off the usual crowd?? Or have we left them "speechless" - lol

Ok, let me get this straight. If anyone calls a conservative government report lies it's calumny but if Huntsy calls an environmentalist report untrue, well then it is A-OK. HA!

What Rebecca Aldworth, director of the Humane Society International Canada, is reported to have said is that almost all the seals killed are younger then three months old and that arctic weather conditions often prevent accuracy so that animals end up suffering as they die. In the article, she is quoted as saying:

"I've observed the seal hunt for 11 years and this is a slaughter of defenseless baby seals and it's beneath every Canadian to allow it to continue"

In the news this morning it came out that the court challenge could end up taking years to resolve and cost Canadians in the tens of millions. All this for an "industry" that ekes what, $3.5 mil per season? There's Canada on the international stage under Steve and Stockwell - picking and choosing their battles - yessiree

Stockwell Day: "And it is our view inappropriate that a trade decision is taken which is not based on the science. And for that reason we are announcing that we'll be pursuing an appeal of this vote today. We want it made very clear that there should be a clause which reflects any country that is following the humanitarian, scientific and environmental guidelines established by the EU themselves, should in fact be exempted from this particular ban."

The Conservative government of Canada - all about humanitarian scientific and environmental guidelines.

Hahahahahaha!

It is hardly just an "Industry", mystereeoso, it is a way of life for these people. It is part of their culture and you can't place a monetary value on that.

Anonymous said...

From the article: "The ban DOES EXEMPT products that stem from traditional seal hunts carried out by the Inuit, as well as traditional hunts in Greenland, Alaska and Russia."

And I forgot to mention the conservative government of Canada - aaaaaalll about culture. Hahahahahaha!

Anonymous said...

Hmm let's see 12,000 sealing licences, and an overall take of 3.5 mil. How does that break down? Each sealer is making about three hundred bucks a year?

You are right bec, it's hardly just an "industry".

So, to conclude, you are FOR the ban and support the EU position?

Hi Brenda. I have to agree with you on this one. If you want to eat, you must be prepared to accept that things MUST die.

While living in China, it took me some time to get my head around clubbing puppy dogs to death but damn, they were good eating!

Huntsy objecting to activist tactics today:

"That's what the animal rights groups count on, and that's why they still use 25 year old pictures of cute, white baby seals being clubbed, they know it will disgust us."

Huntsy PROPOSING activist tactics on April 19, 2008:

"The lefties cry about seals being killed, and then they turn around and demand that women have the right to kill their own babies. Guess if their abortions were carried out on the snow so we could see the blood and baby parts they might change their minds."

Gayle said...

I am not sure she will get that one Mystereeoso.

That said, I tend to agree that it is hypocritical to condemn killing baby seals when one is prepared to eat meat or wear leather.

Anonymous said...

I'm pretty sure Huntsy gets it, Gayle. She gets paid to conflate the issues. She's conflating carrots with seals. The other day she conflated honour killings with evil feminists. Basically Huntsy thinks it is perfectly fine to sensationalize select issues but not others. I'm just sayin'.

Huntsy accuses the woman from the Humane Society with slander for quoting statistics from the government's own report.

Thank you for that, Gayle. Finally, something with which we are in total agreement.

To go one step further and totally OT, I love people who push for saving the environment - while using disposable diapers on their baby. The same people invariably drink bottled water and drive SUVs but by gum, they sure do want to save the environment. Also hypocritical.

I buy my meat from an organic farm where the animals run free and are not force fed unnatural food and loaded with hormones and antibiotics.

Stereo - you are sounding a little obsessed with Hunter. What do you do all day - search her archives for quotes? Really, you need to get away from the computer. Sheesh.

Southern Quebec said...

But E of E: don't you think that the animals should be killed humanely? Not clubbed over the head and skinned while still alive. Or a crab ripped apart while alive?

Describing how something was killed and not caring if it was dead, is a "little" sick, no? Can we agree on this? Oui?

They should be shooting the seals from helicopters. Why is hunter not suggesting this? Crickets. Why does hunter hate guns? Why does hunter hate Palin style hunting?

Hahahahahahahaha!

What sustainable hunt in the world allows that number of young animal to be killed?

Lee said...

Sustainable means that which can be sustained.
Numbers don't mean anything.
For example, here in Kamloops B.C. we have a population of California bighorn sheep. Natural Resources keeps close track of the herd.
When the numbers indicate that the herd is getting too large, they allow a limited number to he harvested. A few years ago, I applied for a tag (unsucessfully) and the total allowed for that year was seven.
There are millions of seals. Obviously the number allowed to be taken will be larger.

What planet are you from? Are you saying there is an infinite number of baby seals? That'll drive up pelt prices.

Not.

Meanwhile, over at Blue Like You - some of the other issue conflating types are also busy with baby seals and abortion.

liberal supporter said...

Conservatives for Palin agree, anything is sustainable as long as it won't run out during the lifetime of the Quitbull. Presuming she has at least another 50 years, I think the Earth will survive that long. There's a huge backlog of edible humans, should the animal kingdom be exhausted near the end of that time.

SQ - mais oui. I remember that whole baby harp seal clubbing broadcast way back when and it was sickening. Yes, animals should be killed humanely - a bullet through the brain is quick. We are humans and we have the power and tools to be reasonable and humane. I saw a moose being taken down by a pack of wolves - that was gruesome but natural.

I don't eat veal because of the way the calves are raised, nor suckling pig - besides, I do not wish to eat baby animals. I don't eat lamb because I hate the smell and taste.

I'm not in favour of hunting as a sport - I find it disgusting, to be honest. I don't eat lobster because it is tossed in boiling water.

Oui, nous sommes d'accord...on that one point (so far).

Southern Quebec said...

I don't have a problem with hunting if the animal is used for food. I have a major problem with hunting from helicopters (like SaWah the idiot). THAT is not sporting.

My big problem with this post of Hunters is that she seems to treat animal life very lightly. (Oh, well, it's just an animal. Complete lack of compassion or sensitivity.)

"The crab we caught got it's shell ripped off and innards scrapped out (I think it was dead by then, but I'm not sure, I couldn't look). "

I wonder if Rigger is in proper hands...

Oh, and Karma. She has brought bad Karma upon herself.

SQ - I think Hunter used hyperbole just to hammer home a point - as in goading the vociferous animal rights advocates who are less than honest. As for Rigger - those dogs and foster homes are rigourously monitored so he's in no danger.

Anonymous said...

Re: "hyperbole" and "goading the vociferous animal rights advocates who are less than honest."

Just as you used alliteration, East, when you wrote about rigorous monitoring for Rigger.

Ya think? Hahahahahahahahaha!

(hammering home points!) HA!

You do understand why the abattoirs do not allow recording what goes on there don't you?

Unlike seal hunting where it is pretty obvious what animals are being killed, they don't want you to know what's actually in that steak you had at lunch.

"It's people!!"

Am I the only one who wonders if Stereo has a snake up his butt?

Anonymous said...

We, in Canada don't say butt, we say bum.

And you probably should confine your curiosity to a different blog - separate from Meat, Hyperbole and Alliteration. You could do it on a different one, perhaps called Am I the Only One Who Wonders?

With a good speculative blog title like that, you'd be off the hook for hammering home points!

Stereo, give your head a shake.
Sustainable means keeping the herd at a certain level.
I'll explain it in terms that even my 5 year old Grandson understands.
Lets say the total count of the herd is 2 million.
the birth rate is 200,000.
Therefore , to keep the herd at a "sustainable" level, you harvest 200,000 seals.
I dont know why i bother...........

Re: "Therefore , to keep the herd at a "sustainable" level, you harvest 200,000 seals.

BABY seals in arctic regions where it is unrealistic to "know" (ie impossible to count) the size of the "herd". I don't know why you bothered either. I don't really see this as Sawah's issue.

I fear for our future if your grandson is as stupid as you are.
If you have a birth rate of 200,000 and you harvest 200,000, your herd will decline.

Unless you know of some herd that has been "saved" and therefore all its members will have everlasting life, there will be other deaths in the herd and your harvesting of the entire number of births will cause it to decline.

Now I'd really enjoy hearing your explanation of how there is no absolutely no possibility there is such a thing as climate change, in terms your 5 year old Grandson can understand. I suspect it would involve looking at a thermometer outside your window and drawing conclusions about the whole world from it.
