Who's The Liberals Next Victim Needing Rescue?

Who is the next target of the Liberals? What poor soul needs to be saved no matter what they might have been convicted of in another country? How can our judges interfere anymore in another countries jurisdiction, because an admitted murderer might be Canadian. Let's see what has happened so far:

Brenda Martin
Shockingly, Martin wrote, after being repatriated to Canada by federal authorities, her short stay at the Grand Valley Institution for Women, near Kitchener, Ont., made her long for a return to her Mexican jail cell.

She felt "threatened," she wrote, and was ready to go back to the jail her supporters fought so hard to free her from.

"Eight days into the Kitchener, Ont., prison, I was ready to go back to Mexico! I would much rather be in a Mexican prison than a Canadian one," she said.

Nice, we spend $82,000 to get her back to Canada, release her almost immediately, and she still wants to go back to Mexico! Ex-PM Paul Martin even visited her in the Mexican jail. That was a media stunt so the Liberals should pay that $82,000 back to taxpayers, as they were the ones, with the help of the MSM that made such a stink about this convicted Canadian. Why do Liberals think that other countries judges are to be ignored, while our judges are infallible?

Next we have this creature:

Cannon's request that Montana spare the only Canadian on death-row in the U.S. comes after a Federal Court demanded that the Harper government resume clemency attempts for Smith.

In 2007, the Harper government said it would no longer seek clemency for Canadians who had been tried and sentenced to death in democratic countries.(The guy admitted he killed them!)

Smith's lawyers successfully fought that policy, saying it amounted to government approval of capital punishment, and violated the Charter of Rights.

Smith won, the court ordered the clemency attempts to continue, and last week, Cannon told the Commons it was obeying the order.

The Charter of Rights according to the judges applies even when a crime has been committed in another country. The judges are getting "golly", they are making decisions that overstep their powers, and those powers are awesome!

Next we have this total miscarriage of justice for Canadian taxpayers:

"They have acknowledged my innocence. This means the world to me."

With those words, Maher Arar finally loosened the long yoke that has followed him around since he was deported from the U.S. and sent to be tortured in Syria in 2002. It happened after the R.C.M.P. provided false information about his ties to terrorists.

He accepted a long awaited - and much cheaper - settlement package from the federal government Friday. He had originally been asking for $400 million. He settled for $10.5 million, along with another $1 million to cover his legal costs.

For not torturing him, we paid $10 million, that makes no sense, and I expect more "I am innocent" claims to be brought against the Canadian taxpayers. They will win, our Liberal judges guarantee it. Here the next guy who we all know is going to sue us:

"If we would let a Canadian citizen be tortured and then permanently exiled, without any charges, without any court, without any due process, if we hadn't stopped that, then we would have crossed a line."

However, Abdelrazik's ordeal isn't finished as he remains on a UN blacklist, which bars him from seeking employment.

His lawyers could also launch a suit against the Canadian government if Ottawa was implicit in sharing information with Sudanese officials which led to Abdelrazik's arrest, said Liberal foreign affairs critic Bob Rae.

However, with or without a legal case, Rae said the Canadian government should reveal if it did indeed share information with Sudan.

I guess us silly Canadians should go to a foreign country, get arrested, claim torture and come back to Canada and file a $500 million lawsuit against Canadian taxpayers. Sounds fair to me. Not.

Liberals have been interfering in all these cases, yet in the case of Arar and Abdelrazik, they were both arrested and tortured on the Liberals watch. Think about that, the Liberals ignored them and now that they are out of power, they are digging up their own dirt!

Understand that many negotiations need to be done in private, with the two nations affected, without interference by the opposition (Liberals you are NOT the government, get over it). Yet we get this Liberal MP sticking his arse into something the government has jurisdiction in.

McTeague, the party's consular critic, said Day's comments show a lack of understanding of the Saudi justice system.

"How can he be encouraged when this has gone back (to the lower court) for the sixth time?" McTeague said.

"The reality here is he shows a distinct lack of interest by making that kind of a comment, because it demonstrates in spades that that simply means another rubber stamp that continues to put the life and Mohamed and his brother in jeopardy."

McTeague, the party's consular critic....Funny how they don't mention that he is the Liberal parties critic, nope the MSM can just distort facts if it means they have a story that makes the Conservative government look bad.

I'm sure I have missed other "victims" the Liberals want rescued, it makes me wonder if any Canadian got killed under their watch.

Who's the Liberals next victim needing rescue?

A couple of days ago a canadian pedophile was arrested in the US. He has lived in Mexico for years and crossed into the US almost daily. He has been connected to a child porn ring. Can't find the story now. Bourque had it first, and eventually it made NNW.
And don't forget that guy in Montana asked for the death penalty when found guilty. This one hits home as the murdered victims were friends of a dear friend of ours. Ever notice that the American never make waves trying to get the draft dodgers and AWOL men/women back home.

Spoken like a true "compassionate conservative"!
"...since he was deported from the U.S. and sent to be tortured in Syria in 2002. It happened after the R.C.M.P. provided false information about his ties to terrorists."

You believe it's AOK for Canadian officials to give FALSE information to foreign governments so they can torture Canadian citizens.

Please stop mixing your comparisons:
Smith in Montana: convicted of a crime
Martin in Mexico: convicted of a crime
Arar: victim of stupid (racist) government
Abdelrazik: victim of stupid (racist) government

Even you should be able to see the difference.

1)I believe that anyone that was elected to parliament IS part of the government...just may not be the majority.

2) What about the NO SWEARING rule? Or does the IOKIYAC rule apply? just asking...

3) Smith - white
Martin - white
Arar - brown
Abdelrazik - brown
Anyone see a pattern?

Hey Huntsy - did you know that our government is "not obliged" to show clemency (clemency: the disposition to show mercy, especially toward an offender or enemy) to it's citizen's who find themselves in trouble abroad? Did you know that clemency is now something Canadians have to "EARN" from the very government they elect and pay taxes to support?

Re: "How can our judges interfere anymore in another countries jurisdiction, because an admitted murderer might be Canadian. Let's see what has happened so far: Brenda Martin..."

Do you mean potential Canadian and admitted murderer Brenda Martin? No need to read any further. Totally convoluted, ignorant tripe.

" For not torturing him, we paid $10 million..."

Obviously I read more.

"Why do Liberals think that other countries [sic] judges are to be ignored, while our judges are infallible?"

Well, why do conserves think they don't have to obey the law?

Maybe Liberals and probably more Conservatives than you would admit are wondering when when El Primo Stevo and his gang are going to stand up for Canada.

BTW, Dan McTeague towers above Stockwell Day in his command of the issues. I know you would favour Stock since he is after all a university drop out.

The man I am referring to is covered in The Star, via NNW, today.
And I do not believe that Arar was ever tortured. We were conned big time. Now what Somalia did to several of their criminals, that is torture. In public, cut off a hand and foot from each one.

university DROP OUT!

EVERYONE!!!...MaryT disagrees with the Arar Commission!!! Wow, rather than admit a mistake, the first thing Conservatives do is blame the victim! Then get a woody dreaming about torture in the coliseum in front of crowds. (ah the good old days...)

I believe McTeaugue is introduced as a Liberal MP at the beginning of the article. If they referred to him as Liberal Consular Critic each time they quoted him - your knickers would probably be in a much sorrier knot than they are right now.

What laws have they not obeyed.

Although, to quote your friend Gayle, you probably will say you don't have to prove a negative.

Gayle said...

Hunter - while Arar was being tortured in Syria, and the LPC were in power, what, exactly, was the Official Opposition saying in the House of Commones?

Do you think the CPC was staying quiet so as to not interfere with negotations?

And while I am sure it really pains people like you and Mary to do this, making up facts to support your dubious position is not actually effective.

Gayle said...

Oh, look at this. In 2002 the Official Opposition was calling Arar a terrorist and condemning the LPC's efforts to assist him. As it turns out, it was the governing LPC who were right about Arar:

Well let's hope Iffy drives the Libs deep into thug hugging, murderer clinging and terrorist apologist territory in the next election.
And hopefully Duceppe follows Iffy's lead.
Because then a majority will be OURS!!!

You LibDipper fools don't have a clue what the general population thinks.
You think compassion should be for the criminal/accused and ignore the rights of the victim.

You fools think that protecting the most vulnerable means providing taxpayer funding for safe injection sites and giving permanent residency to US war deserters, bringing 'home' murderers, showing leniency towards every criminal at the expense of the victim.

You LibDippers champion the fringe, collectively, while igoring the REAL most vunerable...children and decent Canadians, the majority.

Under LibDipper governments, our courts ruled that pornography has 'artistic merit' and the scum of the earth escape prosecution.
Revolting!

I am looking forward to watching Iffy & Duceppe suck and blow on the Conservatives crime agenda.

Obviously criminals want to come back to Canada; we have the most lax laws in the Western world and the most cry-baby political party, the Liberals.

Frank: Where is it written that Arar and Abdelrazik are criminals? If Abdelrazik (who was cleared by CSIS and the RCMP) is such a super-duper criminal-type terrorist/bad guy, why did the Canadian Ambassador in Sudan, let him virtually live in the reception area of the embassy. Frank, think about it. On second thought, maybe not such a good idea...or possible...

I think the title chosen for the topic - "Who's the Liberals next victim needing rescue?" - points to the wrong perspective. It shouldn't be the task of the official opposition to have to prod the Canadian government to intercede on behalf of these Canadians charged with a crime by some foreign government, detained overseas or obstructed from returning. The government should do its duty in the first place and not have to be shamed and prodded into responding.

Based on the list of names presented, I don't believe Gayle can make the case the Harper government is racist, simply equally indifferent to the fate of such Canadians, whatever their origins.

The trouble with legal principles and obligations with respect to cases like some of the above is that they are put to the test, often with individuals who are not model citizens with some lily-white, spotless record but rather the contrary.

I am satisfied that Aldelrazik has been repatriated, and am curious as to what further information will surface with respect to the allegations made against him by the US government. He has been tagged with all sorts of names and there is a lot that remains unknown and should be properly opened to public scrutiny.

Wow, the rudeness level is pretty high, today. No doubt, I'll incite a bit more with my comment but, so be it.

With regard to Maher Arar, there are a few things which don't sit altogether quite right with me. At the time, the Hill Times had quite an article on the whole affair and something came out: he was asked to show where he was physically tortured, shocked, beaten, etc. and he refused to allow his body to be examined. That, of course, made me a little suspicious because, in all the photos I've seen of him, he looks quite unscathed.

Of course, I have no proof either way but you'd think he'd want to show the horror which was inflicted on his body.

Another question: why was he detained by the country of his origin? I never saw any indication as to the "why" of his detention.

Now, just to head off false accusations of racism - I am of 100% Lebanese descent and, although they came from Lebanon, my mother's parents were actually born and raised in Syria. So, I am 100% Arab descent so anybody who calls me racist because I am suspicious of Arar's claims can just go and take a flying leap.

I am not excusing the USA for sending Arar to Syria but, from what I've seen and read, I really do have to wonder why Arar did not show the results of the torture he claims and why Syria imprisoned him.

Brenda Martin: I wish she had been left in Mexico. Since her return, she has done nothing but complain and pine for Mexico.

Southern Quebec said...

I would have to assume he has his clothes on in the pictures you've seen...

And I just knew that SQ would ignore almost all of my comment. Sorry SQ - I will not allow you to draw me in to a silly argument. If you wish to engage in a rational and adult discussion as Stereo and I had the other day (although we are completely opposite in our views), then I will be happy so to do. I am an adult and I do not engage in pointless arguments with somebody who refuses to consider a comment in its entirety.

Thank you for that. That is the last time I use Alberta Girl's leaps of logic in order to reach a conclusion. From now on it will be facts, not speculation.

Perhaps what you perceive as "rudeness" is just a level of dissent proportional to the opinions expressed today by Huntsy?

I would ask if your own comments address the entire content of Huntsy's blog essay.... They certainly don't address SQ's objections to it in their entirety.

"Who's the Liberals Next Victim Needing Rescue?"

What a title. Makes all the sense in the world - well it might, to an anti intellectual propagandistic spin-o-saurus rex or a sixteen year old.

dupmar said...

I am not sure what the game plan of the Harper government is with cases like Abdelrazik's. It makes no sense to obstruct indefinitely, or obstruct to the point a legal decision forces your hand. Unless you have solid grounds which would justify such opposition, it would make more sense to do what is expected of you in the first round and reap some positive beneft from your action. As it stands the Harper government is being condemned for pointless obstruction, they conceded the point in the end after being shamed into making such choice with ensuing damage to their reputation, and have not even satisfied hardline defenders who now rant about Harper being left-wing, "soft on terrorism" and "Conservative in name only".
The decision, as finally taken, appears to have pleased very few.
Excepting of course Mr. Abdelrazik.

Southern Quebec said...

East: You said you had "suspicions" about Arar. What could possibly make you think that he was not tortured? There was a whole commission -- the Arar Commission -- and they believed he was tortured. (They also probably had information that was not publicly disclosed)Enough so that they cut him a $10 million cheque.

So, is this just a 'gut' feeling or do you have actual facts.

hunter said...

The question is why did the Canadian government pay Arar $10 million for torture by another country?

Gayle trying to make PM Harper racist is a good indication of how low you lefties have sunk. By the way, the Liberals had a MAJORITY so it didn't matter what the opposition was saying.

Now I know you Liberals LOVE the UN, so explain to me how come Abdelrazik and Arar are still on no-fly lists? Are you on a no-fly list? Why not? Oh, you haven't been supporting terrorists, funny that!

Southern Quebec said...

"The question is why did the Canadian government pay Arar $10 million for torture by another country?"

1) Cdn officials told the US that Arar was no longer a resident of Canada;
2) The US claimed that the Mounties gave them a list of suspicious people and Arar was on it; and
3)Cdn consular officials in NY knew that Arar was being held, but did nothing to stop his deportation.
Because of all these screw-ups by Cdn officials, Arar was sent to Syria where he was tortured. The Syrians thought they had a genuine terrorist because of the incompetent Cdn & US officials sending him to them.

While the Cdns didn't torture him, it was because of them that he was tortured. Pay-out time...
Get ready for the pay-out to Abdelrazik...

You are acting like a petulant 16 year old. Stop it!

The O'Connor report's, terms of reference "strictly limited the scope of O'Connor's activities to a mere public review of the actions of Canadian officials in relation to Arar".(see below)

So no, the inquiry was far,far from an in depth investigation.
There were many things left unasked and unanswered, in other-words because of the limitations.

An excellent source of reference is "Dispersing the Fog" by Paul Palango.

"Gayle trying to make PM Harper racist is a good indication of how low you lefties have sunk."

Sigh... I was trying to point out how flawed AG's reasoning is, and used this as an example of what kind of silly baseless conclusions you can reach when you fail to think logically.

I apologize however - I should have realized this would go over your head.

"By the way, the Liberals had a MAJORITY so it didn't matter what the opposition was saying."

Aside from the fact that is simply untrue (political pressure can be brought to bear with or without a majority when governments behave properly and accept that MP's for minority parties still represent Canadians), the point is that Harper said one thing while in opposition, and then said something completely different when he was in government.

Some people would say that means he is a liar - and I do not need AG's convoluted thought process to come to that conclusion!

A perfect example of why Iggy is loved by Liberals, they are all arrogant and think they are superior.

Logical thinking by a lefty? Too funny.

LS you obviously have no explanation why the Liberals, including an ex-PM thought Brenda Martin was special. Anyone else going to Mexico and getting convicted of a crime gets ignored by the Liberals. Problem is that you lefties started this bleeding heart, save all criminals in Canada campaign, and are now extending it to Canadians convicted in other countries. You have started something you now can not stop, or will you pick and choose, according to your own rules, who deserves your attention? Have lefties now become the judge and jury? Should we call in the HRC's? Forget about the harm terrorists can do to our country? How sure are you that your child will not become a victim of terror because lefties and their judges pressured the government into allowing suspected terrorists back into our country? According to your "logic", we should take all the prisoners at Gitmo!

An example of your logic is that the gay pride parade gets to go ahead in Toronto, but Canada Day celebrations are canceled. Quite the logic there isn't it?

Anonymous said...

Huntsy what was the defense Smith's lawyers used against the Conservative government in 2007? ( Hint - the answer is in the article you quoted.) Did they tell the judge that he was somehow "special" or they prove that the Conservative's new policies violated the Charter of Rights?

Were you planning on coming to Hogtown for Canada Day Huntsy? Too bad you missed Pride. It was awesome. Canada Day will be great too. There just won't be as many porta potties lying around everywhere for people's convenience. Most Torontonians will take care of business before they leave the house. Or use the washroom at Starbucks. No biggy....Hahahahahahahahaha!

so Huntsy, how about them facts on Arar...no comment?

Hunter, a few thoughts

Brenda Martin - ungrateful shit. There’s just no pleasing that woman is there?

Mahar Arar - torture was claimed by Arar but never proven. The Arar commission was, in not-untypical bleeding heart Canadian fashion, a bunch of naifs and wusses. The government settled out of court to shut the issue down and move on.

Montana v Ronald Smith - a suggested letter from Lawrence Cannon to Montana:

Dear Governor:

Re. Fairly tried and convicted murderer and (unfortunately) Canadian citizen Ronald Allen Smith

Despite our firm belief that Mr. Smith is a poster-boy for the death-penalty and that Montana should expeditiously “take care of its own business”, the federal court has ordered the government of Canada to demand that the state of Montana show him clemency. Please consider this letter a fulfillment of that court order.

Yours sincerely,

Hi Hunter ... good post. It seems you have struck a raw nerve with all the "sensitized" lefties such as Gayle.

I always find it amazing that when someone comments on a common sense issue , that every leftist-socialist elite spews vitriol regardless of the facts.

In Arar's case there is much evidence to support the terrorist claim of the USA and CSIS , and I agree $10M is far too much!!!!

In Abdelrazik's case , how did he get Canadian citizenship in the first place ? Oh and to all you left-wing bleeding hearts who slobber at the feet of the UN ... the UN has declared Abdelrazik a terrorist !

Liberal 'compassion' will kill you.

Btw, calling a govt 'stupid' and 'racist' is hilarious coming from a person who supports a traitorous party that once had Bernard Landry as its leader..

Btw #2..if you are beaten about the body with 1-2" electrical cables as Arar claimed, you would be scarred for life, and have many broken and cracked bones to show for it.I have seen people whipped within a half an inch of their lives with such implements. Trust me, they neither walk ,talk or think normally, nor hold 2 hour pressers with no signs of harm evident.

Do you know where the favourite spot is to beat people with these items for maximum impact? The hands and the feet.Look at any tape of the man and tell me if you see any crippling injuries evident.

Lefties berate the govt for not believing him, when he consistently refused to offer evidence that he was tortured, and has done so to this day.In fact, he was awarded millions of dollars without so much as a doctors note to say he was tortured.

The construction of Section 13 is a Liberal and NDP construct how's that working out? Hug a thug and coddle a criminal has been liberal doctorine for two decades. Thus using their loopy logic I'm guessing the Liberals will demand the legalization of Polygamy, it shall be down hill from there. Check out the tolerant left at CBC in the Polygamy thread regarding Bountiful.

I also note every social experiment the left committed has been a dismal failure, the Modern Liberal bares no resemblance to the Classical Liberal.
