Bad Opposition! Into The Dog House You Go!

Western Separation just got a huge boost today, thanks to our lefty opposition.  Can they get any dumber? Let's go all econutty to gain some lefty votes.....oh wait...they already have all the lefty votes, so let's pander to our lefty, green, immature voters and forget about the economic future of Canada. Iggy comes to Alberta and mouths platitudes about supporting the oilsands, then turns around and tries to destroy the industry with a sneaky vote on banning oil tankers. Does he think we are stupid? Okay, rhetorical question.

OTTAWA — The opposition has stepped up its pressure on the Harper government to ban oil-tanker traffic off the B.C. coast, passing a motion in the House of Commons calling on the Conservatives to legislate a formal moratorium.
The opposition parties teamed up Tuesday to pass a motion introduced by New Democrat MP Nathan Cullen urging the government to immediately propose legislation to “ban bulk oil tanker traffic” through the Dixon Entrance, Hecate Strait and Queen Charlotte Sound, off the north coast of British Columbia.
Long live the coalition! Does Vancouver get oil tanker traffic?

He says tanker traffic in Vancouver has grown with the Americans’ desire to acquire secure sources after the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.
Vancouver responded with new regulations that allowed bigger ships into the harbour and stepped-up safety measures.
Ships now use global positioning devices, double-bottomed hulls, guiding tugs, enhanced pilot training and navigational aids.
They carry crude oil from Alberta, a thicker, heavier liquid which doesn’t evaporate, sinks to the bottom and is difficult to clean up.
The huge ships are about one-third the size of the biggest vessels previously afloat, with a 700,000 barrel carrying capacity.
The tankers must navigate two shallow channels — at the First Narrows and Second Narrows.
The margins are so tight that they can’t be fully loaded because if they were, they wouldn’t clear the seabed. The only time there is enough water is at high tide.
Well, well, it appears that Vancouver has no problem with oil tankers, now anyone wonder why they would be upset with some competition from Kitimat? To the environmental groups (with Soros money) who are joining the First Nations groups to try and get the pipeline from Alberta to BC banned, CN already has lines all the way to the coast and oil containers as well. If BC doesn't want the jobs, so be it. We will just keep sending our oil into the US so they can have all the jobs that BC needs.

What the opposition did with this vote was to give the Conservatives more ammo. They clearly showed the coalition is alive and as stupid as ever, and they showed that they do not care about the economy of Canada or Canadian workers. They know the the Senate is going to kill this bill, so they are being hypocrites.

If they were really concerned about oil tankers, they should have voted to stop them from docking in Vancouver, and they should have set the same rules for the east coast....what's that I hear...The Irvings would never agree? Tisk tisk, the opposition are oil whores, for the Irvings that is.

The NEP by any other name still stinks. The Iggomaniac and his merry band of urban yuppies and environuts know a straight forward assault on Alberta's prosperity is out of the question so they will try to throttle our growth by slithering through the back door and throttling our ability to move the product.
Yeah, it's time for Alberta to unhitch its wagon from the "progressive" mules and go our own way.

The scope of incompetence is shown again..and rears it's ugly head often...I hope Canadians are taking note...
I was thinking the same way you were Hunter, about Iggy.

Northern British Columbia desperately needs new industry possibilities and new life to their economy...Nathan Cullen is from there...wonder how many of his constituents he consulted as to their views...he forgets why he is there...in ottawa...to serve his people and help them out... this is not helping...I have heard from a few residents very aware of the sorry state of affairs of their economy...houses not selling, no forestry, nothing...they feel like their towns are dying...
We have the resource. We have a company willing to spend 5 billion to pipe it. We have kitimatt standing by.... you would think everyone would understand the need and get onboard.
Sad...We cannot let this go...we have to blog, blog and blog some more...we shall never give up ...we shall always point out to anyone who reads blogs what the coalition is up to..

You know my views Powell on your quest...I will fight you every inch of the way...I am for Canada.

NB - re your comment on "fighing Powell". You don't live in this province - you haven't been the constant source of money for the rest of Canada only to watch decisions made to take even more from the West.

Western Separatism is alive - I don;t know that it would ever work, but things like this add fuel to the fire.

It is obvious to me that the Coalition know where the votes are and they will do whatever it takes to prove to the Tories that they can mess with their policies - damn the outcome - it's all about power and showing they have it -

That is until it becomes a "confidence motion" then like scared little girls, they run away.

Perhaps if eastern Canada was appreciative of the west and what we have done for years for the rest of Canada, THAT would quell the fight for separatism.

So I respectfully disagree with your taking on Powell for his views...they are the views of many, many right wing supporters in the west. By discounting those views, you discount the reasons for them.

welll golllllly geee alberta girl...
I like Alberta...I lived in the Northwest Territories for 20 years and flew into Edmonton on a regular basis for those 20 years...I visit still..my brother lives there... I know how the National Energy Policy felt to Albertans...I share their view....
Trudeau was the problem and because of that the west hates the east...bad rapp..
I will take on anyone who tries to mess with my Canada as a whole...
What will the state of it be if every province has people who want to separate because they have the resources....
So you are welcome to your comments and I, to mine... and do not say I do not understand...

This is just another example of them doing what their leftard American overlords tell them to.

They'll gladly destroy Canada to satisfy the whims of these Prog supremacists for nothing more than an attempt to become their favorite pet.

Unfortunately they will be euthanized without even a shrug as soon as they’ve served their purpose.

These useful idiots are true imbeciles who don’t have a clue of what they’re doing. They would march themselves right through the Concentration Camp gates and right into the gas chambers without ever questioning their orders.

They are that dumb.

Alberta and British Columbia need this pipeline...Jobs in both provinces depend on it...economically the west will benefit from their resources for a change...I am all for it.
I posted about it after the vote last night but my readership is not big so can only fight a small battle in support.
Nathan Cullen will hopefully lose a lot of votes from his constituents as he lives right smack dab in the area where jobs and enterprise are needed...this will come back to bite him.
The "east" won't have any input but as legislators...so rest easy...

First the motivation: There is being built or at least plans of building a pipeline to the coast to export oil to Asia (China). The Chinese have made heavy investments in the oilsands and not just to make money. They need a reliable oil supply to feed their industry in China. The blocdippylib motion would effectively end the export of oil to China. In western Canada China is seen as a backup consumer of oilsands oil should the US continue to flounder under the inept leadership of teh won the only Oblamebush.

The good news is the motion is not binding and the government is free to ignore it. Meanwhile the coalition of the stupid looks ever more stupid.

This vote is a "huge moral victory" for the left-coast. There is a lot of opposition to oil tanker traffic.

I suggest that if possible oilsands companies start shipping by rail to Rupert, that CN start to upgrade its tracks and safety record which would put pressure on the USA to take more oil for security and thus "eliminate" the need for a pipeline. At that point the First Nations along the route would raise such a stink about being left out that the pipeline would be build (hehehe) and the lefties sink into the sea!!

Further to WCT's point about the rail link to Prince Rupert, read this by John Ivison.

http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2010/12/07/john-ivison-alternative-plans-for-getting-oilsands-crude-to-markets-in-asia/

Fortunately, there is a little-known alternative plan, if the Enbridge proposal gets bogged down in red tape. Prince Rupert on the British Columbia coast has quietly become one of the fastest growing container ports on the continent and is connected by a CN rail line with the interior. It is also the shortest shipping route between North America and Asia – knocking a day and a half off the travel time from Vancouver. The advantage over Kitimat is that it is deepest natural harbour in North America and is already deemed to be the lowest risk port on the west coast in terms of maritime safety. There are no plans to build a pipeline to the port but CN is said to be looking at the prospect of building a pipeline on rails – that is, transporting up to 300,000 barrels of crude oil a day in unit trains to the terminal at Prince Rupert.

I think that the Conservatives should investigate a moratorium on eastern Canadian coastal and St Lawrence Seaway oil tanker traffic, with the view to banning tanker traffic in these areas as well, for the same reasons that the 62 Percenters wish to "ban" west coast tanker traffic. Any comments?
