As Rome Burns...

This article says it all about where our society is heading if we do not wake up.

Boy Shoots Dad's Pregnant Fiancee Before School, Police Say

WAMPUM, Pa. — Fifth-grader Jordan Brown boarded the bus and headed to school like he did most other mornings in this rural western Pennsylvania community.

But before he left home on Friday, authorities say, the 11-year-old boy had shot his father's pregnant fiancee in the back of the head as she lay in bed. He then put his youth model 20-gauge shotgun back in his room before going out to catch his bus, police say.

.....
The boy told police there was a black truck on the property that morning — possibly the man who feeds the cows — sending investigators to follow a false lead for about five hours, Bongivengo said.

.....
"An 11-year-old kid — what would give him the motive to shoot someone?" said Houk's father, Jack Houk. "Maybe he was just jealous of my daughter and the baby and thought he would be overpowered."

This is an eleven year old boy, who shoots his pregnant stepmother in the head, then goes to school as if nothing happened. He also makes up a story to the police about seeing a black truck. This kid is a clear example of what is wrong with society today.

It all started with divorce. This caused the breakdown of the family unit. I don't care if it's a husband and wife, two husbands or two wives, define family however you want, but understand that a lack of commitment to make a relationship work is what is causing our society to destroy itself. It is our kids that are suffering. They need stability and direction, they need a sense of who they are.

The Academy awards tonight were a perfect example of how society worships the vacuous super star over the doctors who save lives. I noticed that most celebrities did not wear the million dollar jewelry, as if that fooled anyone. What bothered me is that they are supposed to be role models to our children, and their lack of morals become what our children aspire to. It reminded me of Rome where people partied day and night while their society was crumbling around them.

Social workers are not going to solve our problems, coddling criminals is not going to root out the real rot in our society. Throwing more money towards every problem that exists is not going to change anything, if it was going to, we would have no more poverty.

As a society, we need to get back to the family unit. We need to care about where our children are, and what they are doing. Me, me, me, has not worked out, it's time to get back to the family, and the community. That is what will see us through this economic situation.

Hunter - you are so correct. I don't understand how it could be that this kid actually had a gun to fire let alone why in the world he would be so screwed-up to do such a thing.

Although divorce was uncommon when I was a kid, it still occured and I don't remember this kind of thing happening as a result.

The family unit has broken down for sure and I can tell you that this is the the type of progress we envisioned during the cultural revolution of the 1960s and 1970s. I am appalled by the prevalence of couples having children when they're not even close to having a relationship strong enough to form a marriage. I am shocked by the number of children who are from multiple fathers. I am disgusted taht we now find all of this acceptable.

What it boils down to is a society which couldn't give a hoot for the welfare of children - although we sure yak about it a lot.

National daycare is not the answer. Programs are not the answer. Psychologists and counsellors are not the answer.

The answer is a family unit - a mother and a father who are happy and comfortable with each other and who are allowed the freedom to raise their children without having both hands tied behind their backs. Sometimes kids need a swat on the bum - it is not abuse and will not harm their little psyches unless some psychologist tells them that it did. We need parents who can set curfews, refuse to buy their kids everything and parents who will spend real time with their children instead of ferrying them from one sports activity to another.

We need a government which will give a significant tax break if a parent stays home during the formative years. We need to return to those regressive, really horrible days like the 1950s when...gasp...children behaved, couples were commited to each other, teachers had authority, kids went to school to learn and not to show off their latest designer clothing, when parents were actively involved with their children...yes, those horrid, backward, truly awful days when a woman could walk down the street without fear of rape or murder. When we could send our kids to school and not even imagine that they could be stabbed or shot to death at school. When kids could go out and just play without adults coaching them and without fear of some child molester lurking nearby.

Oh, thank God we have progressed way beyond the horror which was the old days. I mean, really, who wants to go back to a time when we were secure, happy, orderly and safe? Shoot heck. I really want to live in a world where life is a crap shoot - after all, it is progress, is it not?

Actually, I think I'd like to go back to those horrible old bad days.

Family is a very good thing.

But as far as who to look up to, here is a blog I came across last week which every day highlights a hero of Capitalism.

I can't help but think the world would be a much better place if some of these folks were our role models.

Hunter - did you allow SQ's comment to go through in order to provide us with a comedic moment? As always, his comment adds nothing to the discussion and is, how shall I put this, nonsensical. Personally, I think SQ has the hots for you and this is her way of getting your attention.
