It's A Drop In The Bucket!

It was only $1.75, then, as tends to happen with subsidies, it increased to $1.95. What's the problem here, it's only $1.95 per voter per year? I mean really, it's not like that stupid 2% cut in GST that only means 2 cents less for a cup of coffee. Really, it's peanuts folks, or so the opposition will shortly tell us. The Conservatives should be going after the really big money black holes, like the gun registry, the Canadian Wheat Board, and CBC. Spending billions of our tax dollars to support dying industries, like auto and forestry is surely a much better way to kick start the economy, the media thinks.

Okay, why keep the funding? The Bloq needs the money to promote their party, so they can separate! This is an honourable goal! The Greens need the money to save our environment and the odd polar bear. This is an honourable goal! The NDP wants a chicken in every pot, and a place at the table to help eat it. This is an honourable goal. The Liberals need the money to save the natural ruling party of Canada. This is an honourable goal. So many honourable goals, so little time to convince Canadians that we were wrong to re-elect the Conservatives.

The big, bad, Conservatives have no honourable goals, and this is of course, scary! So say the opposition, while screaming for their taxpayer money instead of going out to their supporters and earning it!

I've posted about this before, way back in March of 2007! I suggested then that it would be a good way to force an election:

I'm getting sick of this lack of cooperation, and I think a lot of other people are as well, so the question is, how do the Conservatives get the opposition to vote down a confidence bill? Here's the answer.

The government puts forward a confidence vote on a bill that would cancel the $1.75 per vote of taxpayers money every political party now gets.

Only the Conservatives are in a position to win on this bill, all other parties are too broke to be able to vote with the government on a bill like that, so the opposition brings down the government on a bill that saves taxpayers millions.

Things have changed, the other parties are still broke, but will they dare vote against this now, just after an election, and while the economy is reeling? Could this be Dion's second chance? HA! Can the opposition scream about reducing government spending then vote this down, causing another 300 million election? The Bloq and Liberals HAVE to vote against this, only the NDP can vote for it, the question is, are they smart enough to take the gift the Conservatives are offering them?

How will voters see this if we end up in another election? Opposition MP's voted down a confidence bill that would have cut their salaries and their continued slurping at the taxpayers trough. Will the left unite, and try to form the government? I dare them to try subverting democracy like that, it would be like a military takeover, without the guns.

It's a beautiful piece of work by the Conservatives, baby steps indeed! Checkmate.

What the f*ck are you talking about?

SQ, Hunter, rather extremely obliquely is talking about poltical party funding the conservatives once enjoyed, funding that once gave them a voice in parliament as opposition reform alliance. Now that they are in "power" they want to curtail that funding, under the guise of economic crisis in a hypocritical move to hurt the opposition. Some democracy!

Hunter, I have a question for you. Why is the Prime Minister of Canada dicking around with divisive, partisan drop in the bucket "solutions" to this economy when he could be leading, like a leader pulling parliament together and attending to the urgency of the economic situation? It seems to me, that for a hockey fan this guy has not learned the cardinal rule. There is no I in team.

BTW, your remark "I dare them to try subverting democracy like that, it would be like a military takeover, without the guns." Is absolutely hysterical. I should think a proposal like the one in question would require legislation. Just WHO is attempting to subvert democracy here? Good luck with that.

Merry Christmas every one

I suspect this issue is a bit of a political rue by the Conservatives to rile up the opposition (a success so far!!). The amount of money to be saved is small in comparison with the total spending budget.

Why don't the we lower the threshold for receipt so that the "fringe" parties can take part in this largess. I'm sure that the Marxist-Leninist or the Rhino parties would love to get $1.95 for their votes - real democracy in action.

Jonnie Creetin strikes back at Paulie Martini ... so funni eh??

Check your word usage Teddi.

Unless you mean some kind of political herb?

How about "street to political oblivion"??

Anonymous said...

For the Conservatives?Sure, why not? They don't seem interested in governing and they don't respect parliamentary protocol, I'm quite sure they will be on the road to oblivion sooner than you might think.

When did Reform ever get 1.95/vote.

Merry Christmas again

I guess Merry Mystee, if you know the road to oblivion you must have traveled it (I assume many times)??

Political Protocol? From the Liberals? Surly you jest?

Check the calendar, you are a day early (or 6 days late) for Hunter's world famous Friday Night Funnies.

Lets see, MaryT - when did C24 pass? What? You say it was 2003 the same year of the PC/Reform Alliance merger? Please correct me if I'm wrong.

WCT, lump of coal, lump of coal! The road of political oblivion is the one the Conservatives took in Quebec where they thought a couple of hundred million dollars they gave to Bombardier would buy the votes of the one in every five Quebeckers who work in culture!

Yes, political protocol, that's a little thing where you take changes you want to make to legislation to the debate and finally the vote of parliamentarians. Not rule by executive fiat - Let me be clear about this - frankly - by fiat I mean order or decree not sportscar.

Simple solution. The liberal party can fold it's tent and be absorbed by the N.D.P.,the useless bloc can starve ,or they can all get off their entitled butts and actually fund raise.I have a case of empty beer bottles for the first party that knocks on my door.

And maybe Elizabeth May will ride off into oblivion - I hope.

The question is still, when did the Reform Party ever get 1.95/vote. What did they get when Deb was elected, as the lone member of Reform.
Watch for a severe case of lib sickness next week, or maybe tomorrow.
