Adopt A Third World Country!

This post by Maria at Dodo Can Spell, got me thinking.

Making Haiti a part of Canada would not only benefit Haitians, it would benefit Canadians as well, as we would be able to either holiday or even retire to our own little sunny island and keep our money on Canadian soil.

It's an interesting proposition, but I wonder if Haitians would be interested. They might be poor, but Haiti is their country and they might want to keep their independence. Maybe we could trade Quebec for Haiti! I'm just not sure who would want Quebec. HA!

We don't need to adopt Haiti, but I think Canada is moving in the right direction by choosing one or two countries to concentrate the aid on. Afghanistan and Haiti are the two poorest countries on the planet, they deserve our support. If the members of the G20 would each choose 2 or 3 countries to concentrate on, we might actually see improvements in those countries.

If Canada only has say 1 Billion for foreign aid, should we divide it amongst 50 countries, or concentrate it on 2? If you spread the funds too thin, you accomplish nothing.

Haiti is now like a clean slate, the world can rebuild it much better than it was before, if they have the will to stay the course. Remember the tsunami? Aid pored in, and countries pledged billions to rebuild, then they left, and forgot all about the pledges. The money went into the government coffers, and everyone turned their backs.

Haiti can be different. One committed country like Canada, can stick with it, and make real changes. If we are going to adopt a country, a warm one like Haiti would be nice.

They'd at least have to vote on it. It might have some support, because they do have a dark history of poor governance. However it could also be considered a Pandora's Box to assume political control. To enforce the Canadian constitution in that hornet's nest would require a very strong police presence. I'm not sure it would work out well for Canada. We would be assuming incredible risk, both legal and financial. It is fantastic to be able to move in relief after a disaster, I don't think we want to take over control.

WOW! How arrogant can you get? There are people dying there and you are talking about "adopting" them?

There seem to be countries like Bangladesh, Haiti and Afghanistan that are like black holes. They really have no luck at all. The only luck I can think of is that we aren't having global warming after all.

I can't imagine a lot more Haitians being welcomed to Quebec. As it is they are severely underemployed here even though they speak a type of French.

Not a bloody chance!

What, you'd hand over 30% of the House of Commons seats to Haitians?

What do you think the result of that would be?

It would suck the life blood right out of this country.

I think people should look at the history of Haiti before making silly assumptions about somehow making it part of Canada.

this from Wikipedia :

"Haiti's regional, historical, and ethnolinguistic position is unique for several reasons. It was the first independent nation in Latin America, the first post-colonial independent black-led nation in the world, and the only nation whose independence was gained as part of a successful slave rebellion."

Doesn't sound to me like a country that would take kinldy to being taken over.

Hunter - the next best thing would be to divert all the Billions of dollars we send to muslim countries like Gaza, Indonesia and a dozen others and focus on Haiti. Because the poor Haitians do not have computer programmers, spin masters, liars and the Left in their camp, these people have not been getting any attention from the world.
It is always the loud-mouthed ones who are listened to like the aggressive muslim nations.

Our govt should from now on focus on Haiti and other genuine poor countries and not the ones that have become professional "beggar" states like Gaza and others.

Never happen, can you imagine a province (it would have to be at least that) with a population of 10 million being suddenly added. Say goodby to Ontario and Quebec's lock on power.

The Turks and Caicos Islands have a better chance imo.

I think the last time a group of white people adopted some black folks, it was called slavery. Correct me if I'm wrong...

Stay classy Blame Crash!

Hey SQ - did you not read the news? Ignatieff is in full support of the idea. Hah. You are so quick to jump all over Hunter that you neglected to inform yourself. T'es bien special, toi.

Okay, SQ, I'll correct you - you're wrong. As usual.

Hunter - I think the idea, if modified, would be great. This isn't the first time we've poured aid into Haiti only to see it diverted away from those for whom it was intended. Given the support this country has received over the decades, it should be on its feet but I believe that corruption and malfeasance have kept the majority of Haitians in dire straits while a small minority have profited handsomely. I find it interesting that the Dominican which is on the other side of the island does not share the same troubles. Clearly, there has to be a clean sweep of the Haitian governing class and some honesty and integrity injected.

Fortunately, we have such a PM - integrity, honesty, class, and brains.
