It's ONLY Winter, No Need To Panic!

It's the weather, not the climate, get that straight. Weather is today, climate is every bodies today averaged out and extrapolated for 100 years.

Good news for the prairies, El Nino is about to show up, bad news for the east, you are about to enter into the cold zone, enjoy!

It doesn't really matter much in Canada, because we are used to winter weather. We have our winter boots, coats and mittens, and automatic car starters. I feel sorry for those people who are getting hit by this cold weather that don't know how to handle this cold or don't have the right clothing.

Years ago, the US was in a cold spell and my American friends were all running water so their pipes would not freeze, you see, they don't have insulated pipes down in many States. They also don't have a clue what a block heater is, they just don't need them. Well, Alaskans know what a block heater is, and maybe some northern states, but not many others. So stay warm my American friends!

Europe is not having a great winter.

It's only winter folks, no need to panic!

Severe winter weather has brought dangerous conditions and transport disruption to parts of Europe.

Temperatures as low as -22C have left 122 dead in Poland and the main river, the Vistula, has frozen over, causing fears of flooding.

In the UK, thousands of schools are closed and travellers have been hit by major delays after heavy snowfall hit large parts of the country.

Western France has issued a weather alert for 14 regions, the BBC reported.

Extreme or severe weather warnings are still in place across the UK, which is in the grip of its longest cold snap for almost 30 years.

Western France? I wonder where Iffy is, could he be snowed in? (H/T MaryT)

There is no end in sight either:

LONDON - Blustery winter weather paralyzed Britain and parts of Europe Wednesday, frustrating air travellers, stranding motorists and keeping thousands from their jobs and schools. London area airports - including Heathrow, Europe's busiest - suffered widespread delays and cancellations.

Forecasters blamed the prolonged cold snap on an arctic weather system that promises more cold weather through the month. Britain's weather office warned that, if the cold keeps up through the end of February, this will be the country's coldest winter in three decades.

It's only winter, no need to panic! What happened to global warming? Crickets from the eco-nuts. Maybe they should stop protesting and start shoveling, in their polar bear suits, at least they will be warm.

Quick! Let's cut off the supply of oil and gas so they can freeze in the dark!

We all know that whole NEP thing was just a joke. We've all got a sense of humour, right?

(And that is my douchebaggish joke of the day.)

You are advocating the murder of innocent polar bears and I demand the right to sue you in a court of law.

How I wish Gore and Suzuki and their fellow prevaricators hadn't been shoveling such a bunch of bull****. I would gladly accept about another thirty or so degrees of global warming so I didn't have to go out the door dressed as if I were preparing for a six month Antarctic exploration.

Just think how cold it would be if we didn't have global warming.
The longer this lasts the more of a joke Copenhagen becomes. Maybe those protesters are being punished, or the roof climbers, or the flag unfurlers.
A relative in Arizona says the water in her bird bath has frozen.
Did Goodale find a warm spot while holidaying there.
Next question, will iggy get home by Jan 25 to go to work.

Coincidentally, I posted this at David Akin's blog yesterday:
http://nsidc.org/snow/blizzard/storms.html
"Some Other Notable Snowstorms and Blizzards ...
Hmmm, who'd have thunk it? Weather - or is that climate - extremes way back when … "

Oh, and then there's this:
http://www.dandantheweatherman.com/Bereklauw/yearnosummer.html
1816 - The Year without a Summer
Introduction
The period 1812-1817 was one of exceptional volcanic activity, and the sheer volume of volcanic dust pumped into the atmosphere by these volcanic eruptions caused a general, temporary cooling in the earth’s climate around this time. ...

Now, here [are] some of the highlights of the year without a summer:
Canada
Between May and September southern Quebec was affected by a series of cold waves which killed crops and led to near famine conditions in some parts. During one such cold spell between June 6th and 10th 30-36cms snow lay on the ground in Quebec City. Meanwhile on June 6th and 8th it snowed in Montreal (Neil Davids 1976). Sub-zero temperatures during June blackened crops and froze ponds killing wildfowl. ..."

Can we expect similar circumstances this coming summer?

Will the Al Gore / David Suzuki / Elizabeth May crowd admit they've been misleading people?
Will pigs fly?

One of my relatives used to tell me that various immigrants from England he knew of would spend their first winter here wearing a light coat and galoshes in the worst of the winter and they seemed to be unaffected for some reason. Only in the second winter would they freeze like the rest of us and wear the usual winter clothing.

The slightly warmer Arctic air will push further south than normal. You know how cold contracts things and heat expands them right? Same for the Arctic air. It is still really cold, but normally we would not see as much of it further south. The jet stream is south of us at the moment so we are getting lots of Arctic air. Even in our summer, much of the Arctic is below freezing but that air does not come south since it is much warmer to the south and the jet stream stays further north. In this winter, the Arctic air is slightly warmer, and while less than a degree at -20 is hardly noticeable, pushing further south is as we are seeing.

Check this out.

Yesterday, on Fox, one of the anchors read a news story from some paper, Artic Ice melting, glaciers disappear, proof of warming, then he said, Oh wait, that is from a 1922 story, we should all be dead.

MaryT, the anchor you were referring to on Fox was Sean Hannity. I saw that too.

Thanks for that frmgrl, I do more listening than watching tv and don't recognize the fox anchors. Other than Beck and Bill O.
