Welcome To Our New Canadians!

Very good news for 24 orphans from Haiti, they now have families of their own. I pray that their new lives will be full of love, joy and happiness, something they have had little of to date.

Kudos to Air Canada, the aid organizations and both governments!

Air Canada mission brings 24 Haitian children to Ottawa

Four hours later, the toddler and 23 other tiny immigrants -- several of them needing hospital care -- arrived in Ottawa aboard an Air Canada "relief mission" jet.

I also agree with Jason Kenney that we have to go slow and make sure the adoptive families are qualified and that the children do not have any relatives that will take them in Haiti.

I also like the idea that planning is taking place for long term help for Haiti.

Haiti thanks Canada for ‘marvellous’ support, ahead of reconstruction talks

OTTAWA -- A sombre Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive thanked Canadians Sunday for their "marvellous" support beginning within minutes of the earthquake that has shattered his country and brought him to Canada for an international conference on relief and reconstruction efforts.

He expressed gratitude and hope during a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper, who assured him of Canadian support in weeks, months and years ahead.

"The task ahead of you is unimaginable," Mr. Harper said, as the pair shook hands before settling into discussions in the prime minister's office about the international conference Monday in Montreal. "I say to you Jean-Max as a fellow prime minister, I just can't imagine."

Maybe we can adopt a country, like we did the Haitian children, and work with that government until they are mature enough to help themselves. We need to be in this for the long term, not just a few weeks. I am very proud of how well the government is handling this crisis. Maybe Michelle Jean can become our special reconstruction envoy to Haiti after she is done being the GG, it would be perfect for her.

The Tories are up to 34% from the 31% reported this week by EKOS. Is this the "Haiti Bump" Soloman was talking about?

The orphan stories were heart-warming and hopeful, and even Jane Taber melted when interviewing Jason Kenney. His clearly sensible approach to not opening floodgates by doing "napkin" changes to existing policies left Iggy's stupid response in the dust bin (and Jane knew this). This was the first Question Period segment I have been able to watch in months without throwing up.

To me, this is what the refugee program was supposed to do, not what it has become under many years of mis-management and bad changes of legislation and regulations. These parents who today welcomed their children are highly motivated, patient adoptive parents and have spent years waiting to have these children join their intact families and to love them. They have all been well-screened by appropriate provincial civil servants. These 24 children will spread a lot of joy and will now have a great start towards being successful Canadians. I look forward to reports of the next groups.

The children that came to Canada yesterday had already been adopted by Canadians. They had just been waiting for the final papers when the earthquake hit. Jason Kenney doesn't know what he's talking about.

Please stop talking about "adopting" Haiti. It is very paternalistic and smacks of racism.

Well well EsQue ... another slam bye! You certainly have changed your tune about Canada adopting Quebec eh?

SQ, you are so full of crap it is no longer amusing. So, despite Hunter's request for us to keep it clean, why don't you STFU and FU and stay FU. You are blight that just won't go away. You're bitter, nasty, annoying and downright stupid. Racist, indeed. I have learned, in my medium long life that those who fling accusations such as racism are the most racist of all. You are a pathetic excuse for a human being - I'll bet you any money that face-to-face, you're the most wimpy little creep around but on the net, oooooooh, you're a big man. You, SQ, are a boil on the butt of humanity.

Great post, Hunter. It is nice to see our fellow Canadians rally around our Adopt Haiti sentiment. It's honourable and certainly is making our PM look even better on the world stage. Hats off to our PM and bloggers like yourself, Hunter, for capturing the humanity and compassion which is one of the trademarks of our PM.

Maybe once, just once, you could spell Michaelle Jean's name right. Would that be asking you too much?

Having a bad day East of Cleveland?

And when leftist sissies tire of dropping the race bomb, they pick on spelling.

E of E was being gentle on you, being you're a cowardly sissy and all.

'Smacks of racism'. Good grief, that was really reaching, wasn't it?

Poor baby. Can't get that 'sissy' word out of your head? If I was fright winger, I'd now be sneering about whether you were called a sissy in grade school.

I thought it was hilarious. All the cries for civility, except when some self important buffoon decides it is time to flame. If I was a fright winger, I'd now be questioning East's mental health, of course.

Poor baby. It is a legitimate comment. I have the same desire to help Haiti, and 'adopting' is something you do with a minor. You make all decisions for the minor in their best interests. The minor has no say in your decisions and must obey you. One could reasonably compare that to how one was supposed to care for their slaves.

Since minors naturally reach the age of majority, we accept this kind of thing, but for a nation, who decides if and when they have reached "maturity"?

Let's partner with Haiti, or be their best friend.
