Remembrance Day, With A Little Help From My Friends!

Remembrance Day is a great day to honour our troops, but we need to remember and care about our troops everyday. My first friend, my husband, talked about a commercial from Walmart he had just seen, a Christmas wish, I found it for him.

Then we have my friend, Jen, who gave me the link to "A Pittance of Time". You need to read the singers explanation about how the song was created. The guy paying no attention to the two minutes was a real person, make sure you aren't that guy this year.

Another friend and frequent poster, MaryT sent me this:

A lesson that should be taught in all schools . . And colleges

Back in September, on the first day of school, Martha Cothren, a social studies school teacher at Robinson High School, did something not to be forgotten. On the first day of school, with the permission of the school superintendent, the principal and the building supervisor, she removed all of the desks out of her classroom.

When the first period kids entered the room they discovered that there were no desks.

'Ms.. Cothren, where're our desks?'

She replied, 'You can't have a desk until you tell me how you earn the right to sit at a desk.'

They thought, 'Well, maybe it's our grades.'

'No,' she said.

'Maybe it's our behavior.'

She told them, 'No, it's not even your behavior.'

And so, they came and went, the first period, second period, third period. Still no desks in the classroom.

By early afternoon television news crews had started gathering in Ms.Cothren's classroom to report about this crazy teacher who had taken all the desks out of her room.

The final period of the day came and as the puzzled students found seats on the floor of the deskless classroom, Martha Cothren said, 'Throughout the day no one has been able to tell me just what he/she has done to earn the right to sit at the desks that are ordinarily found in this classroom. Now I am going to tell you.'

At this point, Martha Cothren went over to the door of her classroom and opened it.

Twenty-seven (27) War Veterans, all in uniforms, walked into that classroom, each one carrying a school desk. The Vets began placing the school desks in rows, and then they would walk over and stand alongside the wall... By the time the last soldier had set the final desk in place those kids started to understand, perhaps for the first time in their lives, just how the right to sit at those desks had been earned..

Martha said, 'You didn't earn the right to sit at these desks. These heroes did it for you. They placed the desks here for you. Now, it's up to you to sit in them. It is your responsibility to learn, to be good students, to be good citizens. They paid the price so that you could have the freedom to get an education. Don't ever forget it.'

By the way, this is a true story.

We need more teachers like that one to instill in our children the pride and honour for our troops that they deserve.

Thanks for all the help from my friends!

Finally, I want to thank everyone who comes out, no matter the weather, to the 50 bridges covering 170 kilometers, to send our heroes home in style on the "Highway of Heroes". I am sure it comforts the families of the fallen to know that Canadians care. Understand that for every single person standing on those bridges there are another 1000 from around the country who wish they could be there to send our troops home, with respect for their sacrifice. Even Prince Charles mentioned our "Highway of Heroes". Get your Kleenex out.

May we have no more people who have to gather on the bridges to welcome our heroes home. May we gather next time to welcome them home, with a job well done, and all troops having their hearts, minds and souls, intact.

Tomorrow, on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day, of the eleventh month, take two minutes of your time to remember, ALL of the men and women who fought and died for our freedom. It's the least we can do to honour our troops.

Hunter - I cried and still have a lump in my throat, especially after seeing the soldier limping home on one leg.
Great vids to remember the sacrifices that our soldiers make so the rest of us can have our freedom.

Why did you omit the fact that Robinson High School where Martha Cothren isa social studies school teacher, is in Arkansas? Just because it was in the US doesn't lessen the story.

Why, on today of all days, when we remember those who died for our FREEDOM, do you behave exactly like the tyrannies my father, grandfather and fought and my cousins died fighting against?

Are you going to delete my words too? Are you trying, on today of all days, to pretend that somehow "the left" is not patriotic? Are you really going to try and politicize Remembrance Day? Please don't.

Maybe she left it out because she didn't have the info. Blame me and quit jumping to conclusions.

I deleted those comments because they were disrespectful, of my blog, and our soldiers.

Fair enough. Why did you omit where it came from? I googled the words and found the Snopes page that reproduces the entire story, and moreover says the story is in fact true.

We'll never know now.

I'm seeing a lot of anger on right wing blogs (from the blog owners) today, and I don't understand why. We should be remembering the fallen, not bickering for partisan ends.

It came to me via an email from a friend and I fwded it to Hunter.
At least you admit it is a true story.
How boring your life if you have to google every word posted.

You ask why I am angry? Because I want to honour our troops, and some lefty idiot comes to my blog and disrespects my choice of tributes, and me. Then you come here and yap about free speech. Like your little sanctimonious rant I have quoted above.

Your buddies show no respect and that tars you with the same brush. Why didn't you comment on the "Highway of Heroes" video? Nope you come here and are blaming me for deleting comments that I found offensive. Well, it's my blog, and the soldiers also fought for MY RIGHT to not have to tolerate idiots in my house.

Admit? That would imply I denied it. I did not.

There are many blogs where the blog operator posts things that are untrue. I never accept "facts" uncritically. I think it's called being "progressive", no? ;)

I get some of these kinds of chain emails, and more often than not, they are bogus. Did you not get the one about "McDonalds is now buying all their beef from South America"? Did you believe it and pass it on? If not, would you have believed it had you not personally been in the cattle business as you have mentioned before? I got the Canadian version, with "Texas" pasted to "Alberta" cattle feeders association. That's also why I wondered at "Arkansas" being removed from the deskless classroom story.

Hard to say without seeing the offending words. Lots of people get pretty upset over nothing.

Then you come here and yap about free speech. Like your little sanctimonious rant I have quoted above.
It remains ironic that you would delete comments on a day honouring those who fought for our freedom of speech.

Your buddies show no respect and that tars you with the same brush.
Guilt by association was one of the hallmarks of the tyrannies we fought. Simply being Jewish was enough to tar someone with the same brush as being evil and fit only for being killed.

Why didn't you comment on the "Highway of Heroes" video?
Youtube doesn't work properly here. I've been on the bridges though not every time since I do not live that close to them. Perhaps maryt will admonish you for jumping to conclusions, as she just did with me (and she was right in that instance).

Nope you come here and are blaming me for deleting comments that I found offensive. Well, it's my blog, and the soldiers also fought for MY RIGHT to not have to tolerate idiots in my house.
This is not your house. It is your blog which you choose to have open to the public.
You are certainly free to set whatever rules you want, and I am also free to ridicule when you censor ideas that disagree with you.

He certainly does. He claims my words there are the same as wiping um, poop, on the walls, yet he saves each and every one of them!

He accuses me of lying about things he has no way of knowing anything about, such as my attendance at the Cenotaph this morning or my family. Yet he misrepresents most of what I say, a situation in which he knows and I know that he is lying.

So someone like you I can consider to be crazy, or uninformed, but that's just my opinion some days. While neo is an outright liar. He simply refuses to debate anything rationally, unlike yourself. He can't stand anyone disagreeing with him and cannot rebut any argument without deleting said argument, restating it incorrectly and then trying to rebut that, complete with plenty of channel changing and ad hominem.

There is a huge difference between being merely biased and being unable to carry on a discussion at all.

Oh, LS you get yourself into trouble, don't blame others.

I am tired of this conversation. It is taking the emphasis off of our troops. Let's try to get back to remembering our vets and their contribution to our lives today.

Hunter: Next time you wrap yourself in the flag, pull a little tighter. Using a Walmart commercial to "respect our troops" debased the contribution that they make. Lest you start screaming I hate the troops, my father is buried in The Field of Honour.

PS Stop using American crap to compare our troops to.

Huntsy, I'm sincerely sorry if I hurt your feelings but a walmart advert is uncool as a form of remembrance in my opinion. It's a fail because it manages to weave the fact Canadian soldiers are risking their lives in a terrible war with their sales pitch save money, live better. Truthfully it seems to me you've tried your hand at the same thing with the title of your post commingling Remembrance Day with PMSH Conservative propaganda. It probably seemed cute to you when you thought it up. But it is grotesque. Not only do you commercialize Remembrance Day with your "items" but you also politicize it. It's only for "friends"

You've been called out in the public domain and your reaction has been to delete those criticisms. Like I said, I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings but I'm also embarrassed for you. You obviously don't get it:

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
— Lt.-Col. John McCrae CANADIAN (1872 - 1918)

The sun shone brightly on my parade.

A huge crowd turned out to remember.

Our Vets were in their finest, medals polished, proudly marching instep. The Army, the Navy, the Air Force, the Mounties, the Cadets, the Cubs, the Scouts, the Brownies, the Guides, the Pipers, the Band all stood in silence as My Town paid tribute to all of Them and to all of Our Fallen Comrades.

We shall Never Forget, We shall Always Remember.

Thank You Sidney-by-the-Sea

I on the other hand, am not sorry if I hurt your feelings. For the simple reason that anyone who equates a Walmart commercial with Remembrance Day is completely devoid of any feelings!

PS Get your head out of Dear Leader's lap -- it's unbecoming!

hunter said...

No, SQ, you don't get it. It isn't about commercialism, it's the message, from a boy to his father, but lefties just don't hear the message.

hunter said...

I'm sorry your father is buried in The Field of Honour, too bad he didn't have time to raise you.

maryT said...

Watching Fox, after all the services re Rememberance Day. That Wal-Mart commercial come on. I thought it was very moving and appropriate as it is Veterans Day in the USA.
Guess they didn't get the memo, don't advertise on Fox.

Reasonable, until claiming "lefties" don't get it somehow. Part of the endless "lefties hate the troops" meme.

I'm sorry your father is buried in The Field of Honour, too bad he didn't have time to raise you.
Then this cheap shot. Now who's disrespecting troops?

hunter said...

Well LS, you think it's a cheap shot, I think it's the truth. Everyone needs a father to mentor them.

Funny how all the lefties stopped posting when you stepped in. Careful, you might lose your fans if you start making sense.
