The BBQ Days Of Summer!

It's interesting how well what this article by Paul Wells says is PM Harper's strategy and this article match up.

Here's some of the main points:

Wells article:
For our purposes today it is better to understand the Harper coalition, not as a matter of geography (Quebec nationalists, Western reformers) but of demographics. Harper appeals, and plans to keep appealing, to middle-class and working-class employees, tradesmen, parents of small children, entrepreneurs, and military families and their supporters. People who believe they pay more to Ottawa than they are used to getting from it, whether in money, programs or respect. Harper and a few lieutenants — his strategic chief Patrick Muttart, his underappreciated junior minister Jason Kenney — have been thinking about and planning how to cement that coalition still further, and encourage its judicious growth at the margin.

CTV article:
Harper reiterated Conservative criticisms that the Liberal plan would simply shift tax dollars out of Canadians' pockets back into federal government coffers, boosting the cost of just about everything.

"It will stop the economic progress of the Canadian middle class dead in its tracks and it will make the cost of living unbearable for fixed income seniors and low-income seniors."

So PM Harper is solidifying his base support, the middle-class. He's a Tim Horton's kind of guy, one the average person can relate to. Having pictures of him with his young family doesn't hurt his image either.

Wells article:
But could Harper survive another failure to win a majority? Oh, probably. It's now 20 years since a Conservative leader won a majority. The interim has been humiliating for all concerned. There isn't a Conservative MP elected before 2004 who doesn't remember internal feuds, funereal caucus meetings, days when poll scores in the mid-teens felt like a breakthrough. Pundits are glib about those days, but Conservatives feel them in their bones. If Harper keeps his party in power by the slimmest of margins, they will not be inclined to punish him.

I have to agree that PM Harper will not be punished if the Conservatives win another minority, they will still be the government, and he will still be the Prime Minister, why would we change a good thing?

But in America in the 1960s as in Canada today, for a significant chunk of the electorate "the new hated elite . . . was cultural — the 'toryhood of change,' condescending and self-serving liberals 'who make their money out of plans, ideas, communications, social upheaval, happenings, excitement,' at the psychic expense of 'the great, ordinary, Lawrence Welkish mass of Americans from Maine to Hawaii.' "

The Liberal elites, all those special interest groups run by lefties, are suffering. Their bridge to power has been broken, and they cry through the MSM about their pet projects that the government won't fund any more, never understanding that the Conservative government is about getting REAL results, not just some paper written about woman's issues.

CTV article:
The prime minister told the crowd that his minority government intends to deal with the "escalating problem of violent youth crime" when Parliament resumes in the fall.

"We must send a message - and we will - that we hold young lawbreakers responsible for their behaviour. That is what we intend to do this coming session."

Law and order is a middle class issue. Parents with young children care about this issue. It is also an issue the appeals to his base. The nice thing is that it appeals to people of all political stripes, not like Dion's green shaft which appeals mainly to Toronto elites.

Harper finished his speech by saying he has never felt more hopeful about his party, having broken the Liberal lock on power and demonstrated that there's a better way to govern Canada.

But he warned supporters that his Conservative minority government could face another election "at any time."

Having broken the Liberal lock on power was a major breakthrough, people now have seen what the Conservative party can do in government, and they are liking what they see. Internationally PM Harper is listened to and respected. He has repaired US/Canada relations, and he has stood up strongly as a friend of Israel. He has supported our troops with more than talk, he has acted. The country is more united now than I can ever remember it being. The Liberal elites don't like it, but the average middle class voter sure does.

Good post!

I say the PM will get his majority unless a bomb the likes of cash envellopes in hotel rooms occurs before the next election. Although Quebec drank the Al Gore kool aid, they detest Dion with a passion so his Green Shaft won't do much there either. Quebec has gas at 1.50 right now. If the price stays high, Quebec will be most of the tipping point for the majority. The left, because of the Liberals weak performance due mostly to their leader will split the vote in three for the most part which will also squeeze the Conservatives to win many ridings.

I personnaly can't wait for that election. I hope the Liberals take a huge hit the likes of the PC in the 90's.

Again, what exactly would you do with a majority, that you can't do now?

That's your problem. You can govern like you have a majority now, except you will be defeated as soon as you attempt your radical right wing legislation. So you are living a lie. Everyone knows it.

Everyone knows you can't trust Harper.

Canadians want a statesman, like Dion, not a henchman, like "yo Harper"

Hahahaha!

Hey anon #2, the hidden agenda trip is wearing a little thin. If there's any hidden agenda, it lays within Dion's Green Shift travelling snake oil show.

Maybe Paul Martin had a hidden agenda when he dined with the terrorist Tamils.

How about Chretien when he fiddled as his fart catchers were busy passing cash stuffed envelopes in restaurants?

It's clear that there's no shortage of psyco tin foil hat wearing moonbats out there. Keep it up you sissies, it's the best way to ensure a CPC majority and I can't wait for that day!

Nice try. The Harper fascist agenda is not hidden at all, is it?

If there's any hidden agenda, it lays within Dion's Green Shift travelling snake oil show.
Yes, when you say how much it will screw everyone, what you are really saying is you want to continue to punish people who pay more than they should simply to subsidize the oil industry. $5 billion a year, no?

Maybe Paul Martin had a hidden agenda when he dined with the terrorist Tamils.
Maybe he hadn't designated the Tamil Tigers a terrorist group. The Tamils are an ethnic group in Sri Lanka. But then many of you cannot differentiate between an ethnic group and a radical terrorist group using that ethnic group in its name.

But demonizing entire ethnic groups is nothing new for you.

How about Chretien when he fiddled as his fart catchers were busy passing cash stuffed envelopes in restaurants?
Yes, there were bad underlings. Unlike Harper, personally directing the in&out scam and the Cadman bribe.

It's clear that there's no shortage of psyco tin foil hat wearing moonbats out there.
I'm sure there are. The nuttiest ones are the CPC supporters.

Keep it up you sissies, it's the best way to ensure a CPC majority and I can't wait for that day!
I'm sure you can't. What, again, was it you would do with a majority that you can't do now? Yes, I saw you sidestep that question. Now answer it.

I'll answer it, the Conservatives could get their youth crime bills passed without having to put up with lefties whining about the poor babies that kill a teenager with a golf club and get house arrest. Or about parents that GASP spank their kid, or GASP ground them for putting inappropriate pictures on the internet.

The Conservatives would be able to get rid of the special interest groups who do nothing to actually help people, and take that money and put it towards safe houses for battered women instead of spending hundreds of thousands of dollars for a report on why women are battered.

They could shut down the 2 billion and counting useless long gun registry, and put that money towards hiring more police officers on our streets.

They could get rid of the useless Canadian Wheat Board that sucks money out of our western farmers, and finally let our western farmers compete world wide.

That's just a few off the top of my head, maybe others can list some more things the Conservatives could do with a majority.

Actually anon it would be very easy to shut down the s[ecial interest group. All you need to is let them survive on their own without any gvt funding. Socialists don't think it is their obligation to pay for their beliefs so cutting off their gvt funding would effectively shut them down. But then that is what should happen anyway. We don't need any National Scocialists telling us what to do or think and last time I checked Hitler was a socialist not a conservative.

BTW you lost the debate when you invoked Nazis the first time.

Okay anon, you has gone too far, you are totally ridiculous, and I will not have my site polluted with your ignorant views.

The only posts I have deleted to date have been ones with swearing in them, other than that, I have allowed differing views, but you have crossed MY line. I do not want to have to read your disgusting opinions on my own site.

Go spew your hate somewhere else!

Thanks Hunter. Might I also add...axing the Wheat Board, getting rid of the dinosaur, the CBC, permanently yanking funding for NAC-SOW....

I'd also do away with tax dollars going to political parties.

I'd audit Chretien's 'foundations' (and the Wheat Board) open up the Shawinigate AND the sponsorhip scandal with NO restrictions on what they can look into (thank you Paul Martin)

And if we run out of things to do, how about looking into the tainted blood scandal and how former senator Clinton sold hillbilly prison blood to a Canadian company where a former Prime Minister sat on the board of directors.....?

The list is endless, but I'd put a high priority into investigation, trying and if need be, incarcerating Lieberal politicians.

Here's a sure fire way to ensure Dion will continue to boycot confidence motions.....threaten to look into which Quebec ridings received the infamous brown envelopes!

Yep, payback will definately be a_______!

Ah, yes Eskimo, how could I have forgotten the CBC, I guess it's because I never watch it. Thanks for pointing that one out!

IMO a Harper majority would not look much different than this minority government,
except the bills wouldn't be watered down.
Once PMSH got thru parliament an extention to the Afghan mission, one wonders if a majority is even necessary...?

PMSH wants the Conservatives to 'replace'the Libs as the natural governing party of Canada.
So that would call for incremental change.
Easy, now that Dion has dragged the LPC so far left, leaving center-center right wide open for PMSH.

Dippers and Greenies wanted a 'real' enviro policy.
Dion gave them a half hearted carbon tax, but will use the funds to pay for their social spending promises.
Will Dion be able to woo those enviro votes from the NDP & Greens?

The next election campaign will be on a vision, for 10, 20 years.
The North, adaptation to climate change, energy security, public/private healthcare.

My main concern is the MSM, they are the main cause why the liberals lasted this long. the MSM are campaigning live on television for the liberals since the libs can't afford to campaign on their own.
The MSM supports the liberals their corruption thievery support for terrorist groups than they do for us canadians who want our money back.
The European news media reports positively on the canadian prime minister yet, the canadian MSM reports negative on/of the prime minister.

I see AnonyHaHa is here again with his silly questions and his even sillier statements - "statesman like Dion". Isn't that an oxymoron - emphasis on moron?

And what we could do with a majority, anonyHaHa is EXACTLY what we have been doing for the last two years (almost three!!!) - the difference is that they would not have to threaten an election to get legislation passed or continually swat the annoying "pseudoscandals" the opposition uses to try to bring down the government. Oh - and skip the socialist trough eaters and give the money to those that actually need it. Oh - and continue to leave even more money in the pockets of Canadians.

Nice try on the old Hidden Agenda thing.

Anony HAHAHA is just frustrated because he realizes that his loyalties have been for naught. And when Anony HAHA gets frustrated because he is losing, he resorts of name calling and finds himself banned. HAHAHAHAHA

Typical.

Hunter...as I mentioned before your blog is doing well, getting a lot of attention, and your truth really hurts those de-pressed libs who see the demise of the party.
PMSH is doing a great job. That silly 'hidden agenda' line should be challenged: After almost 2 years are we still waiting?
As jen mentioned the media is ignoring all the good that the CPC government has accomplished. Check out the CPC web site for some great pictures of the G8 that never made it to MSM.
BTW...I think PMSH has lost weight.

Yes it should. You continuously shriek "hidden agenda" whenever your real agenda, which is not hidden at all, but highly repugnant to most people, is pointed out. It can only be considered hidden because others have to point it out, due to your deafening silence on it.

You just don't like the fact that your leader is not trusted. "Yo Harper" is just a henchman. Surrounded by his own bumblers.
