So You Remember Obama's Basketball Shot?

Of course it was a photo op, but here is an email sent by an American soldier about his impressions of Obama's visit. I am blanking out his name, or anything that might identify him. Thanks to my American friend, who keeps me updated on what real Americans are thinking. She also provides me with most of my Friday funnies.

This comment from a US Marine, does not go along with what we saw on national liberal TV… S.
I Received this from someone who was in Afghanistan when Obama blew in. I've taken out all the forwards

Hi all FYI--for what freedom is worth.

T and J P are our friends who live in Virginia.

(Below is from T)

I don't know each of your personal political convictions, and apologize if anyone finds this offensive. I thought it was important enough to share.
This is J's first hand view of Senator Obama.

T

---------- Forwarded Message ----------
Hello everyone,
As you know I am not a very political person. I just wanted to pass along
that Senator Obama came to Bagram Afghanistan for about an hour on his
visit to 'The War Zone'. I wanted to share with you what happened.

He got off the plane and got into a bullet proof vehicle, got to the area to meet with the Major General (2 Star) who is the commander here at Bagram.

As the Soldiers where lined up to shake his hand he blew them off and didn't say a word as he went into the conference room to meet the General. As he finished, the vehicles took him to the ClamShell (pretty much a big top tent that military personnel can play basketball or work out in with weights)
so he could take his publicity pictures playing basketball. He again shunned the
opportunity to talk to Soldiers to thank them for their service.

So really he was just here to make a showing for the American's back home that he is their candidate for President. I think that if you are going to make an effort to come all the way over here you would thank those that are providing the freedom that they are providing for you.

I swear we got more thanks from the NBA Basketball Players or the Dallas Cowboy Cheer leaders than from one of the Senators, who wants to be the President of the United States. I just don't understand how anyone would want him to be our Commander-and-Chief. It was almost that he was scared to be around those that provide the freedom for him and our great country.

If this is blunt and to the point I am sorry but I wanted you all to know what kind of caliber of person he really is. What you see in the news is all fake.

In service,
CPT J P
American Soldier

American by birth
MARINE
by the grace of God

This struck me because it is a first hand, behind the scenes, account of what we don't see from the media. Honesty.

God Bless All Of Our Troops!

This email has already been thoroughly discredited and, in fact, the auhor has asked that it be taken down if posted on aany blogs stateside.

WAKE UP!

Oh, so it is true, thanks for verifying that. And why does the New York Daily News still have the exact same email up then?? Shouldn't they be taking it down? Maybe they should WAKE UP!

Discredited? You just supplied the credit, it is a true email. Guess free speech is a bad thing if you don't agree with Obamamania.

If the e-mail is fake, how can it have an author. Having watched a lot of the trip, I believe the G.I.
Obama has sent out notices to the media about what they can and can't say about him. Can't talk about his ears, his wife, his middle name, and most of all, don't talk about his flipflops.
If possible, Michelle as first lady is scarrier than O as POTUS.
There will be a lot of the social elites who will be sent to the basement. A lot of democrats will get a big shock as they will also be sent to the basement.
How about Hillory as vp for McCain. Wouldn't that cause a buzz, at least the media would have to cover McCain.

Diogenes said...

It's not a fake e-mail, it's factually inaccurate. The guy said: "After checking my sources, information that was put out in my email was wrong." No doubt he doesn't like Obama, which is fine; he's entitled to his opinion (even if themilitary told him to keep it to himself). But he's not entitled to his own facts. Nor are you.

Diogenes: But he's not entitled to his own facts. Nor are you.

He's not entitled to his own facts? He was there, he is entitled to state what he saw and thought. So am I.

I receive this email from my American friend, it sounds real, and I blog it, you post a link that verifies that the email was correct, and now we are not entitled to post it? Get real.

If this is going to hurt the person who wrote it because he is in the military, I will remove it, I do not want him hurt in anyway, that's why I removed all reference to his name in my blog, if I had posted his name, then I would see your point.

Why hasn't the NY Daily News removed the exact same email I blogged? Are they entitled to their own made up facts?

You verified the email is real, from someone who was there, the only reason they are backing down is that people in the military are supposed to be non-political. It was a private email but now the gate is open.

Well, too late, the horse has left the barn, and by trying to suppress the email, it's only getting wider publication.

Diogenes said...

No, he is NOT entitled to his own facts. He Wasn't really there, at least not close enough to see what was going on. He guessed as to what was happening, and he guessed wrong. Even HE recognizes that he was wrong. And the NY Daily News HAS taken the e-mail down.

The email is FACTUALLY INCORRECT.

It's NOT TRUE.

Does any of that ring home with you?

I'm sorry, I apologize. I forgot that anti-Obama folks don't let a little thing like truth stand in the way of a goood smear campaign.

But you look kinda stupid posting false information that was shown to be false days ago. Maybe you need to climb back under that rock, into the dark for awhile longer.

Hunter:

Against my better judgment, I'm actually going to try to engage you on the content of this post, and we'll see whether you're capable of reasoned discourse.

You claim explicitly that the original letter writer was a firsthand witness, using phrases like "This struck me because it is a first hand, behind the scenes, account of what we don't see from the media" and "He was there, he is entitled to state what he saw and thought."

And yet, in that writer's published retraction, he writes (emphasis added):

"“I am writing this to ask that you delete my email and not forward it. After checking my sources, information that was put out in my email was wrong."

Note well the reference to the writer "checking his sources." No one who claims direct, firsthand knowledge of an event would ever refer to having to check his "sources" for verification of what happened. Only people who were getting their information secondhand would ever make such a statement.

Therefore, your claim that this is a direct eyewitness account is clearly wrong, based on a clear admission by the original letter writer himself. Under the circumstances, then, why do you keep pushing the claim of firsthand observation, given that it's quite obviously incorrect.

I await your reasoned and considered response.

By the way, Hunter, in case you need some guidance in how to write a sincere apology and retraction, you might use well-known, right-wing blog "Blackfive" as an example:

"Yes, for the thousandth time, we have established that Senator Obama did not play basketball at Bagram airfield or visit a specific tent.

I apologize, sincerely and contritely, for posting an email from a soldier in Afghanistan suggesting that Senator Obama played basketball.
"

See how that works, Hunter? You screw up, you get caught, you apologize profusely to your readership. That's how things work in the world of serious blogging.

I'm just sayin'.

Um - yeah that's the pot calling the kettle black, Digi!!!

Psuedo scandal after pseudo scandal after pseudo scandal - destroy them with lies! Winning is the ONLY think that matters, RIGHT!!!

Get real and grow up.

The press is being ridiculous is them adoration of Obama - typical of a left wing media - it the candidate can't win on their own; fawn and bow down before him and make him sound like the second coming of Christ (opps - you probably don't like him being compared to anything religous).

The American media is no different than the Canadian media in their quest to set the world right by getting left wing governments into power again.

You just can't handle the Truth!

Nice deflection, harridan, but you're wasting your time (although, I suppose screaming at other people is what you consider 'quality time').

Your gal here is caught dead to rights and only a retraction/correction will set things straight.

Alberta Girl said...

Um Ti Guy, sweetie - you TOTALLY missed my point. But then again, that's pretty typical given your comments. Sigh.

CC said...

Um ... still waiting for a calm and reasoned discussion of the specific topic at hand, based on the actual evidence that's been presented.

Or should I simply assume that's not going to happen?

hunter said...

Okay CC, here is my response. I did not get a copy of this email from the media, I got it from a friend. I could have published the name of the Marine who sent it, I didn't. So this is an email from someone in the military, with an opinion of what went on during Obama's visit. Unfortunately, military people are not allowed to have opinions.

I have already stated that I will remove it if it will harm him or his career, that was not my intent in posting it.

What I find curious is why you lefties are making such a big stink about it. You are making it a bigger issue by whining for me to take it down, then if you had just ignored it.

So, I apologize to anyone who is offended by this email, you can check out the link provided by diogenes to see why there is a problem.

I assumed it was first hand by the way it was written, if it wasn't first hand, I apologize for assuming it was. So, read both sides, and decide for yourselves.

CC said...

That's a good start, Hunter. Now let me explain your various errors and unacceptably weaselly behaviour.

"I did not get a copy of this email from the media, I got it from a friend."

Where you got the email is not relevant, it has no bearing on this discussion.

"I could have published the name of the Marine who sent it, I didn't. So this is an email from someone in the military, with an opinion of what went on during Obama's visit."

And, as we have already determined, his opinion was uninformed and inaccurate, and he has openly admitted as much.

"Unfortunately, military people are not allowed to have opinions."

There is nothing "unfortunate" about that -- as a serving member of the U.S. Armed Forces, that author is not allowed to voice overtly political opinions. Those are the rules. As Conservative "law and order" types, I'm baffled as to why you see his inability to break those unambiguous rules as "unfortunate" but, then again, consistency has never been your strong point, has it, Hunter?

"I have already stated that I will remove it if it will harm him or his career, that was not my intent in posting it."

You should not remove the posting because it might harm anyone's career. You should publicly retract the posting because it is now obvious that it is hideously inaccurate and dishonest. Can you appreciate the difference?

"What I find curious is why you lefties are making such a big stink about it. You are making it a bigger issue by whining for me to take it down, then if you had just ignored it."

Ah, so let me see if I understand this. You righties are allowed to post dishonest slander, but if we lefties call you on it, then we're making a "big stink about it." In other words, you would like complete immunity from publishing dishonest rubbish. Do I have that about right?

(And, once again, no one is asking for you to remove the post. We're asking for a public correction and retraction. There's a difference.)

"So, read both sides, and decide for yourselves."

You still don't get it, do you, Hunter? There are no "both sides" to this issue anymore. The original letter writer has admitted, openly and in print, that he was not a firsthand witness and that what he wrote was incorrect. How exactly are there still two sides to this issue?

You published something, it was almost immediately exposed as partisan, dishonest nonsense, and now you're trying as hard as possible to blow it off as no big deal.

Retraction, Hunter. You owe people a public and unconditional retraction. That's what people with principles do. Give it a shot. Who knows ... you might enjoy it.

CC said...

By the way, Hunter, I am immensely amused by your suggestion that we're suddenly taking this all too seriously, and that it's no big deal. Who could have predicted that kind of reaction?

Who, indeed?

You folks really are depressingly predictable, Hunter. Did you know that?

Hi Hunter,

Interesting flap. Have you seen this blog post? It makes some good points. For instance, in spite of all the CYA back-peddling:

... LTC Nielson-Green's refutation of these two rather minor specific points does not at all address the most important allegation made in the viral email, the author's perception that soldiers on base were "blown off" by the junior Senator.

In fact, the PAO admits that Obama only met with selected soldiers. Only service-persons from Illinois were invited to meet him, and soldiers not from Illinois (the author of the email is from Utah) were indeed not met by the junior Senator. Though no doubt a touchy situation for the military, the key premise holds.

Since the issue went “viral” on the net it’ll be next to impossible to get to the bottom of the controversy. The lefties will continue to be outraged by the perceived heresy - even the nutty Canuck Obama hyper-zealots here.

Ti-Guy said...

What outrage? What perceived heresy?

This is just business as usual...correcting conservative disinformation.

I'm saddened by the fact that our Canadian conservatives have become as gullible and propagandist as the loonies down South.

It's infectious.

By the way, don't kill any more liberals today. It's so...immoral.

hunter said...

Okay, CC, it's a hoax. You win. I post an email, that I took on faith, and you proved it was a fake. Mea Culpa.

Problem is, if a Canadian blogger got this email, how many Americans have also received it, and believed it like I did. How many of them do not read my blog or any other blogs?

This isn't going to just die because Snoops proved it was fake. As I have stated, this just gets more people reading it. You linking to my post got all your readers, who would never normally come to my site, over here reading it, they wouldn't have if you wouldn't have linked to my post. So you are helping keep this alive. HA!

Lulu, honey, some of us Conservative women work for a living, we are not all at home barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.

Thanks for that link JR. Interesting flap? Yup, every time some lefty links to my site, the creepy characters come slithering by. Like my first commenter:

To Diogenes: I read the article you referenced, and I disagree that the e-mail has been "thoroughly discredited." Here is the quote from the article you reference:

“I am writing this to ask that you delete my email and not forward it. After checking my sources, information that was put out in my email was wrong. This email was meant only for my family. Please respect my wishes and delete the email and if there are any blogs you have my email portrayed on I would ask if you would take it down too. Thanks for your understanding.”

Such words do not reflect a retraction of what was true, but that he is concerned about the controversy and the effect it may have upon his family.

It is my recollection that I heard a news report on Sunday morning stating that Senator Obama was happy to report that he had hit something like 8 out of 10 or 12 jump shots. I assume this occurred in his posh hotel's gymnasium (no cameras allowed -- the John Edwards story comes to mind, but that is another issue/topic).

My suggestion is that Senator Obama simply put the issue to rest. Did he shoot some hoops (and talk about it) whilst in Germany? And, more importantly, is the author of the e-mail's recollection accurate?

I hope someone asks the Senator these questions.

GOD BLESS OUR TROOPS, AND LET US PRAY THAT THOSE WHO HAVE FALLEN HAVE NOT FALLEN IN VAIN.

Mark Nygaard said...

Response: The problem is that the statement my "e-mail was wrong" is not very specific. What specifically was wrong? It was just secondhand? The author did not witness EVERYTHING?

The point remains, the issue could be put to rest if Senator Obama responded to the issues. His campaign has otherwise been so quick to respond. What is the delay.

Finally, it means nothing, but the sense I receive from the tone of the author's statement continues to be that the author did not somehow want to embroil his family in the controversy. I could be wrong there. Just the feeling I perceive.

BLESS OUR TROOPS.

KEvron said...

A further point is that the author wrote "This email was meant only for my family." The assumption by the skeptics must be that the author -- who apparently is in a war zone -- just routinely lies to his family. My assumption is that the author was communicating his/her honest sense, impression, and understanding of the events; in an honest way.

Again, there is one easy to resolve the issue. Senator, what are the facts?
